En 2013, Andrea Hall y su madre estaban caminando sobre Southwest Boulevard cuando de repente tuvieron una idea: Abrirían un restaurante.
“Estamos en una zona donde tenemos una gran cantidad de personas de México —y nadie en esta área había abierto un restaurante de comida sudamericana”, recordó Hall. “Así que decidimos hacerlo”.
Su madre y ella convirtieron rápidamente su idea en una realidad. En septiembre, su restaurante, Empanada Madness, celebró su primer aniversario sirviendo un nuevo estilo de comida venezolana.
“Simplemente me siento feliz porque he trabajado muy duro para llegar aquí”, comentó sobre el aniversario del restaurante. “Es un sueño (que perecía) complicado —y ahora, es una realidad”.
Hall, quien nació en Venezuela, da crédito a su familia por hacer el sueño una realidad. Por supuesto, está su madre, Patricia Fernández, quien nació en Colombia y creció en Venezuela. Otros parientes que han mostrado apoyo incluyen a su padrastro, Marcial Trujillo.
“Mi familia ha sido muy importante… (para lograr) el negocio crezca —mis primos, mis hermanos, todo el mundo”, refirió. “Sin ellos, Empanada Madness no sería posible”.
Ella también acredita el éxito del negocio al apoyo de la comunidad en general. Los que han apoyado al restaurante incluyen a varios jugadores de los Royals de Kansas City. Para Hall, su madre y sus empleados, el cliente lo es todo.
“Gracias a ellos, estamos aquí”, dijo.
Para su dueña, operar un restaurante le permite compartir Venezuela con los demás.
“Creo que al tener mi restaurante, puedo mostrar a la gente que hay inmigrantes de diferentes lugares”, indicó. “Quiero mostrar mi cultura, mis raíces”.
El menú de Empanada Madness incluye alimentos básicos venezolanos como frijoles, bistec encebollado, empanadas, arepas y ensaladas.
“Tenemos un poco de todo para todos los gustos”, informó.
Abierto de lunes a jueves de 10:30 a.m. a 8 p.m., viernes y sábados de 10:30 a.m. – 9 p.m. y los domingos de 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., Empanada Madness se encuentra en 906 Southwest Blvd. en Kansas City, Mo. Empanada Madness celebrates one-year anniversary
In 2013, Andrea Hall and her mother were walking on Southwest Boulevard when they suddenly had an idea: They would open a restaurant.
“We are in an area where we have a lot of people from Mexico – and no one in this area had opened a South American food restaurant,” Hall recalled. “So we decided to do it.”
Hall and her mother quickly turned their idea into a reality. In September, their restaurant, Empanada Madness, celebrated its one-year anniversary of serving a new style of Venezuelan food.
“I just feel happy because I have worked very hard to get here,” Hall said of the restaurant’s anniversary. “It is a dream that we saw (as being) complicated – and now, it is a reality.”
Hall, who was born in Venezuela, credits her family with making the dream a reality. Of course, there’s her mother, Patricia Fernandez, who was born in Colombia and raised in Venezuela. Other relatives who’ve shown support have included her stepfather, Marcial Trujillo.
“My family has been very important … (in making) the business grow – my cousins, my brothers, everyone,” she said. “Without them, Empanada Madness wouldn’t be possible.”
Hall also credits the business’ success to overall community support. Those who’ve supported the restaurant include several players with the Kansas City Royals. To Hall, her mother and their employees, the client means everything.
“Thanks to them, we are here,” Hall said.
For Hall, operating a restaurant allows her to share Venezuela with others.
“I think by having my restaurant, I can show people that there are immigrants from different places,” she said. “I want to show my culture, my roots.”
Empanada Madness’ menu includes such Venezuelan staples as beans, bistec encebollado (steak with onions), empanadas, arepas and salads.
“We have a little bit of everything for all tastes,” Hall said.
