Por primera vez en su historia de 37 años, el Teatro Coterie pone en escena su primera obra bilingüe, “Tomás y la Señora de la Biblioteca.”
Basada en la vida de Tomás Rivera, la obra es una adaptación realizada por José Cruz González del libro de Pat Mora sobre Rivera. De acuerdo con un comunicado de prensa de la tertulia, la obra es una metáfora de la importancia de la lectura.
“ Tomás y la Señora de la Biblioteca’ sigue la vida del joven Tomás y su familia, que son trabajadores migrantes que recogen las cosechas de los agricultores”, afirma. “Un verano, Tomas visita una biblioteca pública local y pronto descubre mundos llenos de dinosaurios y tigres – y un nuevo gran amigo en la señora de la biblioteca. Al tiempo que ayuda a mejorar su Inglés leyendo muchas historias nuevas y emocionantes, la bibliotecaria promueve su nuevo interés en el aprendizaje y le enseña la importancia de una buena educación”.
La obra se ejecutará hasta el 18 de marzo en el teatro, que se encuentra en el nivel 1 de Crown Center, 2450 Gran Boulevard, Kansas City, Mo. Los boletos son $ 11 para los menores de 18 años, estudiantes de tiempo completo, y los mayores de 60 años; $ 15 para adultos; y $ 5- $ 6.50 para grupos de 20 o más.
Coterie hosting its first bilingual production

For the first time in its 37-year history, the Coterie Theater is staging its first bilingual play, “Tomas and the Library Lady.”
Based on Tomas Rivera’s life, the play is an adaptation by Jose Cruz Gonzalez from Pat Mora’s book about Rivera. According to a Coterie press release, the play is a metaphor for the importance of reading.
“ ‘Tomas and the Library Lady’ follows the life of young Tomas and his family, who are migrant workers who pick farmers’ crops,” it states. “One summer, Tomas visits a local public library and soon discovers worlds filled with dinosaurs and tigers – and a great new friend in the Library Lady. While helping Tomas improve his English by reading many new and exciting stories, the librarian fosters his newfound interest in learning and teaches him the importance of a good education.”
The play will run through March 18 at the Coterie, located on Level 1 of Crown Center, 2450 Grand Blvd., Kansas City, Mo. Tickets are $11 for ages 18 and younger, full-time students, and ages 60 and older; $15 for adults; and $5-$6.50 for groups of 20 or more.
