Precauciones para el 4 de Julio

4julio

How to stay safe on Independence Day
Commentary by Carey Juez-Perez

Although Independence Day (July 4) is a festive holiday, filled with fireworks, barbeques and family gatherings, safety should be the top priority.
Here are a few tips to keep your family safe this Independence Day:
*Don’t use fireworks at home: That’s the best way to protect your family. There are many free fireworks displays in the Kansas City area. However, if you plan to shoot fireworks at home, check to determine if they’re legal in your city.
*Avoid letting children play with sparklers: Children love holding sparklers, but sparklers can heat up to 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit and small arms can burn easily. Instead, offer a safe alternative, such as glow sticks.
*Be careful when igniting fireworks: With the extreme heat this summer, lighting fireworks in dry grass is dangerous. And don’t point fireworks toward trees or bushes, as they can catch fire. Always make sure a water hose and a bucket of water are nearby, and know how to use a fire extinguisher.
*Never let a child light fireworks: Some fireworks might be defective and others might shoot in multiple directions, catch fire or spark. Adults should use fireworks with caution. Spectators should stand back when fireworks are being lit.
*Beware of the heat: The sun and heat can be dangerous, too. So stay hydrated and avoid sugary or dark drinks.
*Practice gun safety: Some people shoot guns to celebrate Independence Day. If you’re among those people, never shoot into the open air, as the bullet could hurt or kill someone, even if that someone is miles away.
*Offer alternatives: Children can still participate in the festivities in a safe manner. In addition to glow sticks, offer streamers, confetti and noisemakers as safe, fun alternatives.
