Dominique Hernández fue la primera en su familia en graduarse de la universidad donde recibió grados en periodismo con énfasis en comunicación estratégica y la psicología.
La alumna de la Universidad de Kansas ha trabajado para AMC Theaters en el centro de soporte de teatro durante casi seis años. Hernández también actualmente se desempeña como Presidenta de los Jóvenes Latinos Profesionales de Kansas City (YLP), donde ella se esfuerza para ayudar a que la comunidad sea lo mejor que puede ser, ayudando a las personas jóvenes a construir una red profesional y personal.
“Es una gran orga-nización que ayuda a crear oportunidades para los jóvenes profesionales,” dijo Hernández. “Ayudamos a conectar líderes dentro de la comunidad y poner juntos los eventos que no sólo promueven contactos personales, sino desarrollo profesional, asi como de la comunidad y la participación ciudadana.”
Ella estuvo introducida por primera vez a YLP mientras trabajaba para una agencia de publicidad donde Hernández había internado mientras estudiaba en KU y más adelante aseguró una posición a tiempo completo. Gabriel Muñoz, con la Cámara de Comercio Hispana, fue la persona responsable por involucrar a Hernández con YLP. En ese momento, Hernández no participaba en ninguna organización o comités, por lo que la invitó Muñoz a el primer YLP social hace seis años.
“Fue una gran experiencia y poco después comencé a servir como presidente del comité de comunicaciones,” dijo Hernández.
Desde entonces, se ha desempeñado como Secretaria del Consejo Ejecutivo y vicepresidenta. Su mandato como presidenta terminará este diciembre. A pesar de esto, Hernández disfruta de conectar a los jóvenes profesionales aspirantes a líderes de la comunidad y personas de diversas profesiones.
“Me encanta conectar personas con oportunidades para construir relaciones que les ayudarán a (jóvenes profesionales) avanzar sus carreras o ayudarles a alcanzar sus metas personales,” dijo Hernández. “Es una de mis pasiones.”
Como una prioridad personal, Hernandez cree en dedicar su tiempo para hacer estos tipos de conexiones entre los jóvenes.
“Quiero ser un ejemplo para los jóvenes profesionales, para las minorías, para las mujeres y las mujeres hispanas,” dijo Hernández. “Asi que siempre quiero darle un buen ejemplo y hacer mi parte en la comunidad.”

YLP President strives to help young professionals network

Dominique Hernandez was the first in her family to graduate from college where she received degrees in journalism with an emphasis in strategic communication and psychology.
The University of Kansas alumnus has worked for AMC Theaters at the theatre support center for almost six years. Hernandez also currently serves as President of the Young Latino Professionals of Greater Kansas City (YLP), where she strives to help make the community the best it can be by helping young individuals build a professional and personal network.
“It’s a great organization that helps create opportunities for young professionals,” Hernandez said. “We help connect leaders within the community and put together events that not only promote personal connections but professional development, as well as community and civic involvement.”
She was first introduced to YLP while working for an ad agency where Hernandez had interned while studying at KU and later secured a full-time position. Gabriel Muñoz, with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, was the person responsible for getting Hernandez involved with YLP. At the time, Hernandez was not involved in any organizations or committees, so Muñoz invited her to the first official YLP social six years ago.
“It was a great experience and shortly after that I started to serve as chair for the communications committee,” Hernandez said.
Since then, she has served as Secretary of the Executive Board and vice president. Her term as president will end this December. Despite this, Hernandez enjoys connecting young aspiring professionals to community leaders and people of various professions.
“I love connecting individuals with opportunities to build relationships that will help them (young professionals) further their careers or help achieve their personal goals,” Hernandez said. “It’s a passion of mine.”
As a personal priority, Hernandez believes in giving back to the community and dedicating her time to making connections amongst others.
“I want to set an example for young professionals, for minorities, for women and Hispanic women,” Hernandez said. “So I always want to set a good example and do my part in the community.”
