It has been said that people find themselves in others. If so, then the memory of the late Debbie Lopez was found in those who gathered on Oct. 5 to honor her with a “Drink Pink” party at Manny’s Mexican Restaurant in Kansas City, Mo.
Friends, family members and supporters attended the annual event, which raised money for the Debbie Lopez Fund. Lopez died of breast cancer in 2012 at age 52 and is the daughter of Manny’s Mexican Restaurant founder Manny Lopez.
“The (Drink) Pink party originated in 2009, when our sister Debbie was still with us,” said Kim Lopez, one of Debbie’s sisters. “We used this event to rally around her.”
At this year’s party, 100 supporters enjoyed Manny’s food, pink drinks and one another’s company. They included Mary Michalski, Teresa Hilker, Cuzzy Salazar and Janice Mackay, a motley crew of Debbie Lopez’s friends who sat together. Salazar, who worked at Manny’s, credited Debbie Lopez with her decision to attend college.
“(She told me), ‘You’re definitely not going to be one who works for me forever. Maybe you should go to college,’ ” Salazar recalled.
Salazar went on to study at the Keller Graduate School of Management and pursued postgraduate work at Rockhurst University in software engineering.
Kim Lopez also spoke to Dos Mundos about what people can do to improve their breast cancer literacy.
“Knowledge is power,” she said. “Be an advocate to the women in the Hispanic community. Dr. Carol Fabian’s gave us this advice: ‘Get 45 minutes of cardiovascular exercise five days a week, do a little strength and stretching. Make your diet low in fat and sugar, with minimal alcohol consumption. Keep up with your annual checkups.’ ”
Hilker reflected on the event overall, saying: “She would love this. She would love this whole thing. It’s really bigger than Debbie now. It’s really become about what she requested. It’s become about other people. It’s transcended (her).”

Se dice que las personas se pueden encontrar en otros. Si es así, entonces la memoria de la difunta Debbie López se encontró con todos los que se reunieron el 5 de octubre en honor a ella durante la fiesta “Drink Pink” (bebida rosa) en el restaurante de comida mexicana Manny en Kansas City, Mo.
Amigos, familiares y simpatizantes asistieron al evento anual, que recauda dinero para el Fondo López Debbie. López murió de cáncer de mama en 2012 a los 52 años y es la hija de Manny López, el fundador del restaurante mexicano Manny.
“La fiesta (Drink) Pink se originó en 2009, cuando nuestra hermana Debbie estaba con nosotros” indicó Kim López, una de las hermanas de Debbie. “Utilizábamos este evento para reunirnos con ella.”
En la fiesta de este año, 100 personas disfrutaron de la comida de Manny, las bebidas de color rosa y la compañía del otro. Entre ellos María Michalski, Teresa Hilker, Cuzzy Salazar y Janice Mackay, un variado grupo de amigas de Debbie López, las cuales se sentaron juntas. Salazar, que trabajaba en Manny, agradece a Debbie López por haberla motivado a asistir a la universidad.
“(Ella me dijo), ‘Tu definitivamente no vas a ser una persona que trabaje para mí para siempre. Tal vez deberías ir a la universidad’ “, recordó Salazar.
Salazar se fue a estudiar a la Escuela Superior de Administración Keller y prosiguio sus estudios de postgrado en ingeniería de software, en la Universidad de Rockhurst.
El evento también incluyó algunas observaciones de Kim López sobre la importancia de tomar conciencia del cáncer de mama.
Además, Kim López habló con Dos Mundos acerca de lo que la gente puede hacer para mejorar su conocimiento sobre el cáncer de mama.
“El conocimiento es poder”, indicó. “Se promotora de las mujeres en la comunidad hispana. El Dr. Carol Fabian nos dio este consejo: «Realiza 45 minutos de ejercicio cardiovascular cinco días a la semana, haz un poco de fuerza y estiramiento. Haz tu dieta baja en grasa y azúcar, con un mínimo consumo de alcohól. Mantente al día con tus chequeos anuales.’ “
Hilker reflexiona sobre el evento en general, diciendo: ”A ella le encantaría esto. Le encantaría todo esto. Se ha convertido más grande que Debbie. Se convirtió en lo que ella pidió. Se ha convertido sobre otras personas. La ha trascendido”.
