In 2017, U.S. police officers killed 1,129 people – more casualties than the total number of U.S. soldiers killed in action worldwide. In addition, statistics show there are more mass shootings in the United States than anywhere in the world.
Recently, Dos Mundos asked some people why they think that many Americans fear the police and their thoughts on the many shootings in the United States. Here are their answers:
“I think that people fear the police because we have lost sight of the difference between respect and fear, just like they have by abusing their power. The shootings are happening because we still have prejudiced policemen who profile civilians based on their skin color, religion or ethnicity. And … we as people feel threatened when a police officer doesn’t show kindness or is unfair because of the power … (he or she has) been given.”

“I think it depends. Not all people are afraid from the police. Many of us think that the police … (are) here to protect us. Nevertheless, we see that there are bad officers that abuse … their power – and instead of helping … society, they destroy it. This generates fear and anxiety. Shootings keep happening because there is no law that regulates the market. If a person wants to have a firearm, (it) is his right. But at the same time, he needs to show that he is capable of having one.”

“I think people fear the police because there have been many incidents where the police … (have) acted badly. They have this idea that they have total authority and can do whatever they want. Most people who are African-American, Latino … (or are one of America’s) other minorities feel that they are targeted by the police and live in fear. And I think shootings happen too often … because there … (are) people who … (have) a lot of hate inside them and … easy access to weapons. I don’t think there is a need for a person to have an arsenal of guns at home.”

“Well, I think that people are afraid of the police because they abuse … their power. They are racist – and a lot of times, they commit sexual harassment. So instead of feeling safe, you feel afraid and prefer that they aren’t around. And … a lot of (the) police are very racist within our Latin community. The shootings, I think, … happen because it’s very easy to buy a gun. It’s … (easier) to buy a gun … (than it is to buy) some substances. That’s why I think that a lot of crazy people get to buy guns and hurt people.”

En 2017, los oficiales de policía estadounidenses mataron a 1,129 personas, más muertes que el número total de soldados estadounidenses muertos en acción en todo el mundo. Además, las estadísticas muestran que hay más tiroteos en masa en los Estados Unidos que en cualquier parte del mundo.
Recientemente, Dos Mundos preguntó a algunas personas por qué creen que muchos estadounidenses temen a la policía y sus pensamientos sobre los muchos tiroteos en los Estados Unidos. Aquí están sus respuestas:
“Creo que la gente teme a la policía porque hemos perdido de vista la diferencia entre el respeto y el miedo, al igual que lo han hecho al abusar de su poder. Los disparos están ocurriendo porque todavía tenemos prejuicios contra los policías que crean un perfil de los civiles en función de su color de piel, religión o raza. Nosotros, como personas, nos sentimos amenazados cuando un oficial de policía no muestra bondad o es injusto por el poder… que se le ha dado “.

“Creo que eso depende. No todas las personas tienen miedo de la policía. Muchos de nosotros pensamos que la policía … está aquí para protegernos. Sin embargo, vemos que hay malos oficiales que abusan de su poder y en lugar de ayudar a la sociedad, la destruyen. Esto genera miedo y ansiedad. Los tiroteos siguen sucediendo porque no existe una ley que regule el mercado. Si una persona quiere tener un arma de fuego, (es) su derecho. Pero al mismo tiempo, tiene que demostrar que es capaz de tenerla”.

“Creo que la gente teme a la policía porque ha habido muchos incidentes en los que la policía … ha actuado mal. Tienen la idea de que tienen total autoridad y pueden hacer lo que quieran. La mayoría de las personas que son afroamericanas, latinas … o que son minorías estadounidenses sienten que son blanco de la policía y viven con miedo. Y creo que los tiroteos ocurren con demasiada frecuencia … porque hay personas que … (tienen) mucho odio dentro de ellos y un fácil acceso a las armas. No creo que hay necesidad de que una persona tenga un arsenal de armas en casa “.

“Bueno, creo que la gente le teme a la policía porque abusan … de su poder. Son racistas y muchas veces cometen acoso sexual. Entonces, en lugar de sentirse seguro, sientes miedo y prefieres que no estén cerca. Y muchas veces la policía es muy racista dentro de nuestra comunidad latina. Creo, que los tiroteos suceden porque es muy fácil comprar un arma. Es … más fácil comprar un arma … que comprar algunas sustancias. Es por eso que creo que muchos locos pueden comprar armas y lastimar a las personas”.
