President Trump is comfortable talking in front of people, especially if he gets to talk about himself.
Typically, Trump’s favorite topics are how he’s never treated fairly and how he alone can fix everything. However, Trump showed on Tuesday night (Jan. 30) in Washington, D.C., that he’s trainable, just like every other politician. In his first State of the Union address, Trump didn’t talk so much about himself as he showcased other people. According to the White House transcripts of the speech, the president used the word “we” 130 times, “our” 103 times and “us” 15 times.
Here are the main points I took away from the speech:
*Bipartisan collaboration won’t happen any time soon: At first, Trump made several calls for Congress to come together. “Tonight, I call upon all of us to set aside our differences, to seek out common ground and to summon the unity we need to deliver for the people we were elected to serve,” Trump said. But later, the president repeatedly highlighted the differences between his Republican Party and the Democrats.
On the other hand, Democrats were uninterested in clapping for everything the president said, as the Republicans were doing. Much was said by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s blank reaction when Trump mentioned the need to come together for the good of Americans.
*Trump remains stubbornly nationalistic: Trump’s presidential campaign was all about putting America first. His first State of the Union address was no different. During the first hour of his speech, Trump didn’t mention once how America fits in with the rest of the world. The president only discussed domestic policy issues, such as tax cuts, the economy and immigration.
I’m all for politicians defending the interests of their citizens. But what this administration fails to understand is that, in a world that’s interrelated by globalization and technology, America must think of itself within the bigger picture of the world.
*Don’t expect a favorable immigration bill: Although the president mentioned the fact that America needs to keep “good” people in this country, he continued pointing out that immigration reform won’t take place unless funding for his proposed border wall between the United States and Mexico is approved first. Everyone knows Democrats won’t approve such funds. As a result, immigrants will pay the consequences for a divided Washington.

El presidente Trump se siente cómodo hablando frente a las personas, especialmente si habla de sí mismo.
Por lo general, los temas favoritos de Trump son cómo nunca se le trata con justicia y cómo sólo él puede arreglarlo todo. Sin embargo, Trump mostró el martes por la noche (30 de enero) en Washington, DC, que es entrenable, como cualquier otro político. En su primer discurso para El Estado de la Unión, Trump no habló tanto sobre sí mismo como si mostró a otras personas. Según las transcripciones del discurso de la Casa Blanca, el presidente usó la palabra “nosotros” 130 veces, “nuestra” 103 veces y “nosotros” 15 veces.
Aquí están los puntos principales que quité del discurso:
* La colaboración bipartidista no sucederá en el corto plazo: al principio, Trump hizo varios llamamientos para que el Congreso se reuniera. “Esta noche, hago un llamamiento a todos nosotros para dejar de lado nuestras diferencias, buscar un terreno común y convocar a la unidad que debemos cumplir para las personas a las que fuimos elegidos para servir”, dijo Trump. Pero luego, el Presidente destacó repetidamente las diferencias entre su Partido Republicano y los Demócratas.
Por otro lado, los demócratas no estaban interesados en aplaudir todo lo que dijo el Presidente, como lo estaban haciendo los republicanos. Mucho se dijo por la reacción en blanco de la líder de la minoría de la Casa Nancy Pelosi cuando Trump mencionó la necesidad de unirse para el bien de los estadounidenses.
* Trump sigue siendo obstinadamente nacionalista: la campaña presidencial de Trump consistió en poner a Estados Unidos primero. Su primer discurso sobre el Estado de la Unión no fue diferente. Durante la primera hora de su discurso, Trump no mencionó una vez cómo América encaja con el resto del mundo. El Presidente sólo discutió asuntos de política interna, como recortes de impuestos, economía e inmigración.
Estoy a favor de que los políticos defiendan los intereses de sus ciudadanos. Pero lo que este gobierno no entiende es que, en un mundo que está interrelacionado por la globalización y la tecnología, Estados Unidos debe pensar en sí mismo dentro de la imagen más amplia del mundo.
* No espere un proyecto de ley de inmigración favorable: aunque el Presidente mencionó el hecho de que Estados Unidos necesita mantener a las personas “buenas” en este país, continuó señalando que la reforma de inmigración no tendrá lugar a menos que se financien el muro entre Estados Unidos y México primero. Todos saben que los demócratas no aprobarán dichos fondos. Como resultado, los inmigrantes pagarán las consecuencias de un Washington dividido.
