Another restaurant has opened its doors to Kansas City area residents – one that’s not a typical restaurant.
The restaurant is Thelma’s Kitchen, open 11 a.m.-2 p.m. weekdays and located at 3101 Troost in Kansas City, Mo. Customers are encouraged to have lunch at a community table. As a result, they meet people they wouldn’t meet otherwise during their daily lives.
Moreover, at Thelma’s Kitchen, there are no predetermined meal prices. Rather, it’s a “donate-what-you-can” restaurant.
Reconciliation Services-Kansas City is the organization behind the idea of Thelma’s Kitchen. The organization’s vision is for Kansas City to one day no longer be divided by Troost Avenue, but to become an example of reconciliation to other cities. Locally, the goal is to bridge a gap in the city, according to the Rev. Justin Mathews, executive director.
“We’re bringing together east and west, black, white, rich and poor – all together in one place to care for each other as neighbors,” Mathews said.
Chef Pamela Infranca is among those who are helping to care for the diners. Infranca loves creating menus made with local ingredients mainly because her food creates “a wonderful opportunity for all people to come together,” she said.
Mathews encourages area residents to take advantage of that opportunity to come together.
“If you’re doing business downtown and you want (a) great lunch, this is an amazing spot,” he said. “If you’re incredibly hungry and you have nowhere to turn, this is a place where you can come.”

Otro restaurante ha abierto sus puertas a los residentes del área de Kansas City, pero no es un restaurante típico.

La chef Pamela Infranca tiene una gran pasión por lo que hace. A Infranca le encanta crear menús elaborados con ingredientes locales, principalmente porque su comida crea “una oportunidad maravillosa para que todas las personas se reúnan”, dijo.

“Si está haciendo negocios en el centro de la ciudad y quiere un gran almuerzo, éste es un lugar increíble”, dijo. “Si tienes mucha hambre y no tienes a dónde ir, este es un lugar donde puedes venir”.
