U.S. and Mexico reportedly nearing agreement on NAFTA

By Chara

U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross foresees a happy ending to the talks between the United States and Mexico over the North America Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
“Our immediate, most close-to-completion negotiations are with NAFTA, particularly with Mexico,” Ross was quoted recently by Yahoo! News and other media organizations as saying.
U.S. President Donald Trump has said that the United States might make a deal with Mexico first regarding the longtime trade agreement among the United States, Mexico and Canada. Representatives of Canada and Mexico, however, have said that NAFTA is a deal of three nations and there won’t be separate deals for each country.
The last NAFTA talk among Canada, Mexico and the United States took place in June. In July, a group of representatives from Trump’s government visited Mexico to meet with Mexican President-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador to discuss various issues, including NAFTA.
In late July, Mexican Economic Secretary Ildefonso Guajardo issued a message saying he’d had a constructive, positive talk with Robert Lighthizer, U.S. trade representative; and Jared Kushner, White House senior adviser. Guajardo’s meeting with Lighthizer and Kushner also was attended by Jesus Seade, one of Lopez Obrador’s team members.
“We agree that, in order to align the times and to eventually reach an agreement in principle, we should give ourselves the opportunity to move forward and try to bring this to fruition,” Guajardo told Reuters.
At the end of the meeting, Lighthizer issued a statement saying the negotiations would probably conclude during August.
“My hope is that we will before very long have a conclusion with respect to Mexico – and that as a result of that, Canada will come in and begin to compromise,” Lighthizer was quoted by multiple news agencies as saying.
