Dra. Nancy Álvarez: Marriage is only for adults

During one of my shows, “¿Quién tiene la razón?” (“Who is right?”), I watched a mother and daughter and realized how, over and over again, children recycle their parents’ behaviors. The mother cried because her daughter was in love with a guy “just like her dad.” She begged me to convince her daughter to leave her delinquent boyfriend. According to her perception, he was the living portrait of her ex husband, who also went to jail and was ultimately deported. The mother refused to sit idly by, she felt anxious to think that her beloved daughter could go through everything she went through. Sadly, she saw, surprised, as history repeated itself.
The reality is that we pass on to our romantic relationships all the unresolved issues from our families, that is, from mom and dad. It’s like a snowball: We recycled the behavior, unresolved problems, dysfunctions, rules and codes from one family to the next.
Remember, love equals home
What we have lived through in our homes defines what our relationships will be like in the future. Unless we go to couples and family therapy and we work on those unresolved issues of our childhood lived “in the relationship of mom and dad, or in our relationship with both mom and dad.”
In the eagerness to help her daughter, that mother was pushing her away and therefore, pushing her closer to that boyfriend she didn’t want as her daughter’s life partner. In the same way that today we know that love equals home, we also know that paternal figures are untouchable. If you want to ruin your kid’s life, the only thing you have to do is destroy the image of one of their parents. We are not only the biological result of the union of dad’s sperm and mom’s ovum, but we are also the psychological result of the paternal and maternal image. Not only do we inherit biological aspects from mom and dad, but also psychological, emotional, familial, sexual and much more.
Hence, I insist that marriage is for adults only. Raising children is only for adults. Nobody has a right to mark and harm a human being forever. I’m sure the vast majority of parents do it out of ignorance or because they recycle behaviors and conflicts that drag from their parents and families, but it’s time to stop the snowball that’s growing. Enough of so much pain and irresponsibility. We are not to blame for recycling behaviors, but we are responsible for seeking psychological help to stop the snowball. Therefore, it’s not true that only the crazy go to the psychologist; I would say that the crazy and irresponsible, as well as the fearful are the ones that evade solving their outstanding issues and pass the mess to their children and their grandchildren. Are you the irresponsible, the fearful or the brave? The future depends on that.
