Part II of a series on alternative medicine: Naturopathy: A way of self-treatment

Interest in alternative medicine has grown within the past few years. And one form of alternative therapy that is drawing attention is naturopathy.
WebMD.com defines naturopathy as medicine “that uses natural remedies to help the body heal itself.” According to WebMD, treatment methods include acupuncture, nutritional counseling and herbs.
According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, the growing use of drugs and surgery as treatment methods almost caused naturopathy to disappear during the mid-20th century. Over time, however, it has made a comeback.
Practitioners of naturopathic medicine claim to treat the roots of illnesses, rather than the symptoms. They also claim to take a holistic approach to treating patients. Thus, it is common for patients to spend two hours with a naturopathic doctor during office visits.
During a patient’s first visit with a naturopathic doctor, the doctor will check the patient’s stress levels, habits and activities. After discovering the roots of the health issue or issues, the doctor might order lab tests and prescribe a personalized health plan.
Many practitioners of conventional medicine have warned against using naturopathic medicine. But some people with allergies, fertility issues, digestive problems, chronic pain, fatigue and hormonal imbalances have used naturopathy as an alternative treatment and claim it works. Others have used a mix of naturopathic and conventional approaches to get the best of both treatment methods.
Kansas City, Missouri, resident Jennifer Hanes is among those patients who have found naturopathic medicine to be effective.
“I was having tummy issues,” Hanes said. “I got an endoscopy done, a colonoscopy and they couldn’t find what … the problem (was). Everything seemed to be O.K. I was desperate and frustrated, so I decided to try natural medicine. And my problems got solved.”
