Protests, conversations over school shootings continue one year after Parkland

By Tere Siqueira

On Feb. 14, 2018, Parkland, Florida, drew international media attention when 14 students and three adults died in a mass shooting at a high school there. The tragedy also sparked protests and conversations over school shootings and gun violence in general.
A year and a few days later, the protests and conversations continue.
Since the Parkland shooting, more than 1,000 young people across the country have died from gun violence. On Feb. 12, the 1,200 obituaries of children were published as a part of “Since Parkland,” a special publication project led by the Miami Herald and the non-profit news outlet The Trace. The Trace and the Herald partnered with newspapers in several other communities, including Kansas City, to help tell the stories of teen gun violence victims, CNN recently reported. The stories also are online at sinceparkland.org.
About 200 teen journalists helped to tell many of the stories of the victims – most of whom were minorities, whose stories were not covered by the national media. Students were chosen to write the obituaries “because it’s their story to tell,” Trace managing editor Akoto Ofori-Atta told Brian Stelter in a story for CNN Business.
Back in the summer of 2018, the young reporters began documenting the stories of school shootings and other gun-related deaths, including those connected with domestic violence, drugs, unintentional discharges and stray bullets. According to The New York Times, although most of the stories were assigned to the young reporters, some requested assignments on certain victims because they felt special connections to them. A few shared birthdays with the dead.
Some of the information was obtained from the non-profit organization the Gun Violence Archive. The information did not include suicide victims to help avoid triggering more suicides.
