Making Movies hosting fifth annual carnaval

By Roberta Pardo

The fifth annual Making Movies Carnaval will be held 5-11:30 p.m. Sept. 7 at Knuckleheads.
The carnaval is a Latinx music and arts festival that also serves as a fundraiser for the band’s nonprofit organization, Arts As Mentorship. The nonprofit empowers young people of all backgrounds to raise their voices using songwriting and other artistic expressions as a vehicle to instill self-confidence, discipline and entrepreneurial skills. Enrique Chi, the lead guitarist and vocalist for Making Movies, created it in 2017.
The carnaval “invokes the spirit of a Latin American carnaval, where music, culture and protest dance together,” a press release stated.
This year’s event features Las Cafeteras from Los Angeles, ESSO from Chicago, Grand Marquis, youth performers from the Rebel Song Academy and Base Academy of Music, Grupo Atotonilco, the Brazilian Soul Dance Company and the heritage of the band’s members. It also includes live art, street vendors and food trucks.
Tickets range from $15 to $65. For more information, visit https://tinyurl.com/mmcarnavaltickets.
