The yearlong celebration will have its highlight during this year’s Blanco y Negro Gala, set to begin at 5 p.m. this Saturday (Sept. 21) at the Kansas City Convention Center in the Grand Ballroom.
This year, GCI is going all out for the gala. On top of having political strategist Ana Navarro as the keynote speaker, the event will feature Mariachi Azteca de America from San Antonio, dance performances, DJ Silla Torres and two auctions —a silent one and a live one.
Alejandra Vargas, executive assistant to GCI’s chief executive officer, said around 800 attendees are expected.
“It’s never this large,” she said. “We’re trying to impress our guests.”
Cris Medina, GCI chief executive director, said the center hosting its centennial celebration is a testimony to GCI’s commitment to serving the Latino community of this city.
The black-tie gala kicks off Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15) festivities in the Kansas City area. It also provides GCI and its supporters “an opportunity to honor outstanding individuals and institutions … (that) have contributed to the growth and development of both the Guadalupe Centers and the local Latino community,” the organization’s website states.
This year’s gala award recipients are Gina Coronado, receiving the Dorothy Gallagher Award; Justine E. del Muro, receiving the Thomas E. Purcell Award; Jolie Justus, receiving the I. Pat Rios Award; and Metropolitan Community College, receiving the Robert Reeds Award.
Medina highlights that the center’s long-lasting success can be attributed to dedicated board members, staff and volunteers that help GCI in its daily programming and activities. The focus now is to continue on that path.
“As we move forward towards the next 100 years, our focus is to continue and enhance those services that we currently provide while developing new initiatives to carry out our mission going forward,” he said.

Guadalupe Centers Inc. celebra su centenario
La celebración de un año tendrá su punto culminante durante la Gala Blanco y Negro de este año, que comenzará a las 5 p.m. este sábado (21 de septiembre) en el Centro de Convenciones de Kansas City en el Grand Ballroom.
Este año, GCI lo pondrá todo para la gala. Además de contar con la estratega política Ana Navarro como oradora principal, el evento contará con Mariachi Azteca de América de San Antonio, espectáculos de danza, DJ Silla Torres y dos subastas, una silenciosa y otra en vivo.
