U.S. government sets record on deportation filings

By Chara
The Trump administration has set a record for the number of deportation filings for one fiscal year.
According to Newsweek, the Trump administration has filed 385,000 deportation proceedings during fiscal year 2019. A report from Syracuse University’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse stated that, between October 2018 and August 2019, there were 384,977 deportation proceedings filed. September’s total was not included.
“There are delays in getting things in because these are new filings – and so what happens is, each month when you get them, you find that there are not just new ones that came in covering the current fiscal year, 2019, but some laggards that have come in from prior periods,” Susan Long, a professor at Syracuse’s Whitman School of Management, told Newsweek. “You know, the government releases these preliminary estimates and they change (them) when more data comes in.”
The filings are in keeping with statements President Trump has made since his 2016 presidential campaign about his government targeting undocumented immigrants in the United States, even those who do not have criminal records.
“Anyone who has entered the United States illegally is subject to deportation,” Trump said during a 2016 campaign speech, reprinted this summer in a Washington Post story. “That is what it means to have laws and to have a country. Otherwise, we don’t have a country.”
Alejandra Gonzalez, an Overland Park, Kansas, resident, disagrees with targeting immigrants who do not have criminal records and who contribute to their communities.
“It is a big mistake to deport people who are contributing to the economy and the culture of our country,” Gonzalez said. “I think the president should think that the United States is a nation of immigrants, and he should be focusing on targeting criminals and gang members. I hope that our representatives can work together and find a solution to our current immigration problem.”
