Consulado de México organiza Semana Binacional de Salud

Health

Mexican Consulate hosting Binational Health Week

Starting on Saturday (Oct. 4), the Mexican Consulate in Kansas City, Mo., will join Mexico’s other consulates in the United States in hosting Binational Health Week.

“We want to let people know about the different preventive services that they can take advantage of,” said Lee Wong, Mexican consul at the Kansas City consulate.

Binational Health Week, which is in its 10th year, will run through Oct. 10. It’ll feature workshops, screenings and other events – all for free.

“We will let people know how to take care of themselves, what kind of tests they should be taking – and we will talk about different nutritional habits and exercise,” Wong said.

The workshops will start at 10 a.m. and run continuously until 2 p.m. daily.

“To attend these workshops, people don’t need to make an appointment,” Wong said. “However, we strongly advise them to bring their medical records, so in case they need a service, we can address them with the right organization.”

Some of the health topics to be tackled during Binational Health Week include HIV, breast cancer, diabetes, influenza, occupational health and the Affordable Care Act.

To kick off Binational Health Week, the Mexican Consulate will host a bike rodeo from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at Gladstone Elementary School, located at 335 N. Elmwood Ave. in Kansas City, Mo.

During the bike rodeo, the first 150 participants will receive a free helmet. In addition, there’ll be a bike raffle.

“The bike rodeo is a collaborative effort … (involving) several organizations,” Wong said. “If the consulate was to work on this by itself, we definitely wouldn’t make it happen.”

Organizations sponsoring the event include Truman Medical Center; the University of Missouri-Kansas City; Swope Health Services; the Samuel U. Rodgers Health Center; the Mattie Rhodes Center; Kansas City, Mo., Public Schools; the Local Investment Commission; Indian Mound; Univision KC; Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas City; Healthcare USA; the U.S. Department of Labor; and the Missouri Department of Health and Human Services.

Other organizations will participate in the event, too. Arvest Bank, for example, will offer financial advice. Walgreens will provide free influenza vaccines.

“We want the community to come and have fun, take advantage of the different integral health services and learn,” Wong said.
