Teen suicide: How to recognize the warning signs

Commentary by Carey Juez-Perez
According to the American Psychological Association (APA), suicide is the third leading cause of death among teens.
Family violence, substance abuse, depression, behavioral concerns and bullying victimization are a few of the factors that can shape a teen’s decision to commit suicide. Although it can be difficult to predict when or if a teen will commit suicide, the following are a few warning signs:

*Talking about death: This might include talking about how the teen will die, questions about death, funeral wishes, self-harm and disappearing.
*Recent stressors: Puberty and peer pressure can make the teen years difficult. The combination of those issues with other changes, such as a romantic breakup or parents divorcing, might increase the risk of committing suicide. During major changes in a teen’s life, it’s crucial to watch for warning signs and provide extra support.
*Physical changes: Watch for differences in sleeping and eating patterns.
*Presenting false fronts: Society assumes suicidal people appear outwardly depressed. However, they might present themselves as happy and hide their true, painful feelings so they don’t raise suspicion. To help detect false fronts, keep the lines of communication open with your teen by having daily conversations with him or her.
*Negative attitudes: A suicidal teen might possess low self-esteem or believe nothing will improve. Trying to cheer them up might not be beneficial. Often, in such cases, there are underlying issues, such as mental health concerns, that must be addressed professionally.
*Antisocial behavior: Some suicidal teens might become violent toward others, become rebellious or engage in self-harm. Others might become withdrawn and refuse to engage in activities they once enjoyed.
*Mood swings: With hormones raging during the teen years, it’s normal for moods to change frequently. However, mood swings also can be a suicide warning sign. Look for signs of irritability, depression and anxiety.

If you notice any warning signs, seek psychological help from a hospital, therapist or psychiatrist. Those types of professionals are trained to screen for suicide and can provide support.
