Muere Fidel Castro

For some, a revolutionary; for others, a dictator
Analysis by Dermidio Juez-Perez
On Nov. 25, Cuban leader Fidel Castro died at age 90. His brother, President Raul Castro, made the announcement.
“With deep pain, I informed our country, our friends and the world that today, Friday, Nov. 25 of 2016, at 10:29 p.m., the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruiz, has passed away,” an emotional Raul Castro said.
Cuba will mourn its former leader for nine days. Many people are devastated by his death. Others, however, are relieved and take his death as a sign of hope for the island nation.
The reason for the division in reactions comes from Fidel Castro’s controversial reign. To many, he was a revolutionary. To others, he was a merciless dictator.
People’s reactions tended to depend on where they lived. In Havana, Cuba, tens of thousands of mourners met at Revolution Square. People from across Cuba turned out from early morning on to bid their leader farewell. Doctors, nurses, soldiers, students, teachers and other sorts of people gathered to celebrate his life.
However, in Florida and many other places in the world, people celebrated. Most native Cubans who reside away from the island see Fidel Castro not as a loving father figure, but rather, as a dictator who governed with fear and caused the suffering of thousands of innocent people.
It’s unclear what Fidel Castro’s death means for Cuba’s future. Specifically, it’s uncertain whether Cuba will continue its newly revived relationship with the United States. What is clear, though, is that although longtime leader Fidel Castro is dead, his communist ideologies remain alive in the people of Cuba.
