El martes (28 de febrero), Srinivas Kuchibhotla fue trasladado a descansar en su ciudad natal, Hyderabad, India, rodeado de seres queridos.
Kuchibhotla y Alok Madasani, ambos de 32 años, fueron abatidos durante un ataque el 22 de febrero en el Austins Bar & Grill en Olathe, Kan. Madasani permanece hospitalizado.
Un joven de 24 años, Ian Grillot, también resultó herido al intentar detener al atacante. Grillot se está recuperando en el Hospital de la Universidad de Kansas.
Adam Purinton, de 51 años, abrió fuego luego de confrontar a Kuchibhotla y Madasani sobre sus visas, gritando insultos raciales y sospechando que los dos hombres eran de Oriente Medio. Ambos individuos son de India, según varias fuentes de noticias.
A Purinton se le pidió que abandonara el bar, pero rápidamente regresó y comenzó a disparar. Se ha informado de que él gritó, “Sal de mi país!” antes del brote.
Purinton huyó rápidamente de la escena. Fue arrestado cinco horas después del tiroteo en un Applebee’s en Clinton, Missouri. Según USA Today, está siendo “acusado de asesinato en primer grado y asesinato en primer grado.” Además, el FBI está investigando el incidente como un crimen de odio.

Shooting results in hate crime investigation

On Tuesday (Feb. 28), Srinivas Kuchibhotla was put to rest in his hometown of Hyderabad, India, surrounded by loved ones.
Kuchibhotla and Alok Madasani, both 32, were shot during an attack on Feb. 22 at Austins Bar & Grill in Olathe, Kan. Madasani remains hospitalized.
A 24-year-old, Ian Grillot, also was injured while trying to stop the attacker. Grillot is recuperating at the University of Kansas Hospital.
Adam Purinton, 51, reportedly opened fire after confronting Kuchibhotla and Madasani about their visas, yelling racial slurs and suspecting the two men were from the Middle East. Both individuals are from India, according to multiple news sources.
Purinton was asked to leave the bar, but quickly returned and began shooting. It’s been reported that he yelled, “Get out of my country!” before the outbreak.
Purinton quickly fled the scene. He was apprehended five hours after the shooting at an Applebee’s in Clinton, Mo. According to USA Today, he’s being “charged with first-degree murder and first-degree attempted murder.” In addition, the FBI is investigating the incident as a hate crime.
The shooting has sparked outcries for justice and has heightened national discussion about addressing racial hate. On Tuesday, President Trump addressed the shooting during a joint speech to Congress, condemning it as a hate crime. Trump also denounced the recent threats against Jewish community centers.
As quoted in a Kansas City Star story, Trump stated: “We are a country that stands united in condemning hate and evil in all of its very ugly forms.”
However, many Americans felt that Trump’s statement came too late, The Star reported. It took six days and multiple urges from political leaders, including U.S. Rep. Kevin Yoder; national organizations; and the general public to address the shooting before Trump spoke about the Olathe incident.
Moreover, many Americans have argued that Trump is to blame for several racially-charged crimes that have taken place since he took office. The statements he has made during his presidency regarding ethnic groups, women’s rights, LGBTQ rights and immigration laws have been controversial.
Partly in reaction to Trump’s comments, national and local efforts are advocating for unity among the masses and acceptance of all peoples. Such efforts have included GoFundMe pages to help the victims of the Olathe shooting and their families. The efforts have raised more than $1 million.
