Peru is facing one of its worst natural disasters in decades.
The South American country is suffering its worst flooding in 30 years. According to news reports, more than 70 people are dead, 263 are injured and 20 people are missing. In addition, more than 100,000 properties have been damaged.
The most affected areas include Piura, Lambayeque, La Libertad and Ancash. Lima, the nation’s capital, also has suffered damage.
Many meteorologists around the world attribute the flooding to the weather phenomenon El Nino (El Niño). The rain is expected to continue for at least two more weeks.
“We know it is a difficult situation, but we are controlling it – and we are hopeful that it will soon pass,” Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski was quoted by CNN as saying.
On his Twitter account, the Peruvian president asked people to keep calm, stay away from rivers and to be united.
“This crisis is going to pass,” Kuczynski tweeted. “We all need to unite to face this problem.”
Multiple media outlets have shown pictures and videos of the disaster. A few days ago, a video showing a woman emerging from the mud became viral on social media. The woman was taken to a hospital, where she’s reportedly stable.
Many countries are supporting Peru by sending provisions to help the flood victims. The rains have caused food prices go up, and most of the affected people are low-income citizens.
During a recent Mass, Pope Francis remembered those affected by the tragedy.
“I want to express my closeness to the beloved population of Peru, hit hard by devastating floods,” he said. “I pray for the victims and for all those who are working on the relief efforts.”
