La presidencia de Donald J. Trump ha estado llena de numerosas batallas – muchas de ellas innecesarias.
Hasta hace poco, el Presidente no había triunfado en ninguna de sus batallas, en muchos casos, batallas auto-infligidas. Pero el lunes (10 de abril), Trump tuvo la oportunidad de celebrar lo que podría considerarse su primera victoria presidencial: el juramento de Neil Gorsuch ante la Corte Suprema de los Estados Unidos. Gorsuch fue confirmado por el Senado el 7 de abril, convirtiéndose en la 113a Corte Suprema de Justicia.
La victoria viene después de meses de controversia, que comenzó con el Partido Republicano negando entretener al candidato de la Corte Suprema del entonces presidente Obama, el juez Merrick Garland.
En la ceremonia, la felicidad de Trump fue evidente.
“Estamos aquí para celebrar un momento histórico”, dijo Trump con entusiasmo. “Siempre he oído que lo más importante que un Presidente hace es nombrar a la gente – esperemos que sean excelentes personas, como este nombramiento, a la Corte Suprema de los Estados Unidos. Y puedo decir que es un gran honor.
Gorsuch agradeció a todos los que le ayudaron a través del proceso.
“Gracias por la calurosa bienvenida”, dijo el juez a los otros magistrados de la Corte Suprema. También dijo: “Nunca olvidaré (porque) a quien mucho se le da, se espera mucho de él – y le prometo que usaré todos mis poderes para ser un fiel servidor de las leyes constitucionales de esta gran nación.”
Es importante recordar que muchos conservadores basaron su apoyo a la candidatura presidencial de Trump en dos promesas: derogar y reemplazar a Obamacare y nombrar a un juez conservador en la Corte Suprema. Respetar esta última promesa era esencial para la administración, considerando el fracaso de Trump al no poder derogar y reemplazar Obamacare a principios de este año.
Sí, después de más de 80 días de drama, controversia y un giro sin precedentes de los eventos, Trump finalmente ganó una batalla.

Finally a win for the Trump administration

Donald J. Trump’s presidency has been extraordinarily busy with numerous, many unnecessary, battles. But until recent days the President was yet to come out victorious from any of his, in many cases, self-inflicted battles. The administration finally scored a win in the past week.
On Monday April 10th, Donald Trump had the opportunity to celebrate, what could be considered his first victory as President. Trump and his team celebrated Neil Gorsuch’s swearing-in to the Supreme Court. Judge Gorsuch was confirmed by the Senate on Friday April 7th to become the 113th justice of the Supreme Court.
This victory comes after months of controversy, starting with the Republican Party failing to entertain then President Obama’s nominee to the Supreme Court Judge Merrick Garland.
At the ceremony, Trump’s excitement was evident.
“We are here to celebrate history,” Trump said enthusiastically. “I have always heard, the most important thing that a President does is to appoint people, hopefully great people, like this appointment, to the United States Supreme Court. And I can say, this is a great honor.”
Judge Gorsuch used his time to thank everyone who helped him though the process.
“Thank you for the very warm welcome,” the judge said to other members of the Supreme Court. He concluded his speech by saying “I will never forget for to whom much is given, much will be expected and I promise you that I will do all my powers permit to be a faithful servant of the constitutional laws of this great nation.”
It important to remember that many conservatives based their support to Trump’s candidacy to President on two promises; repealing and replacing Obamacare and appointing a conservative judge to the Supreme Court. Based on this fact, the victory on the latest promise was essential for the administration considering Trump’s failure to repeal and replace Obamacare earlier in the year.
Despite 80 plus days of drama, controversy and unprecedented set of events Trump finally wins a battle.
