It’s important for us all to manage our mental health

Commentary by Carey Juez-Perez, Licensed Clinical Social Worker

When people hear the term “mental health,” they tend to think of mental illnesses – depression, anxiety and schizophrenia, to name a few.
But there’s more to mental health than that.
Our mental health begins as early as birth, as it’s shaped by chemicals in the brain, genetics and our environment. It includes our emotional, social and physiological well-being. Our mental health controls our ability to handle stressful situations, make rational decisions and manage our emotions. It even affects our physical health, such as blood pressure and stress levels.
Mental health is a continuum, just as physical health is. For example, some people manage their feelings of sadness in a positive way. Others might need medication to help them manage their sadness and other emotions. This is similar to physical health, as some people can manage their blood pressure by their diet, while others need medication.
As the latest diets and exercise regimens make clear, people tend to focus more on managing their physical health than their mental health. However, in a busy world where 60 percent of physical illnesses are caused by stress (see www.stress.org), it’s equally or more important for us all to focus on our mental health.
So what can you do to manage your mental health? Exercising, eating healthy and getting proper amounts of sleep can contribute to your mental well-being. However, it goes beyond that. Mental health wellness also includes having positive, healthy social relationships. It includes feeling connected to others, staying positive and using healthy coping skills when you’re having a rough day. It includes your ability to manage stress by taking a few moments every day to relax and recharge.
It’s time to make mental health a priority – for all of us.

Incluye nuestro bienestar emocional, social y fisiológico.
