ISIS issues propaganda video in Spanish

By Dermidio Juez-Perez
A week after the deadly terrorist attacks in Spain, ISIS published a new propaganda video – this time, in Spanish and directed to Spain.
In the latest video, an ISIS soldier states the terrorist group wants to restore al-Andalus, a former Muslim territory in Spain in the Middle Ages. In Spanish, the soldier states: “With God’s permission, al-Andalus will once again be the land of the caliphate.”
For many Muslims, the Middle Ages were the golden years of their religion. It’s those golden years that ISIS is trying to recreate. Rukmini Callimachi of The New York Times explained recently that it’s for this reason that “they often harken back to the old words that were used by the early Muslims for these territories.”
In addition, in the video, a member of ISIS praises the Aug. 17 attack in Barcelona and calls for more attacks in Spain. As multiple news agencies reported, at about 5 p.m. on Aug. 17, a rental van was driven at a high speed from Barcelona’s Plaza de Catalunya into crowds gathered on Las Ramblas. The latest news reports list the death toll at 16 people, with more than 120 injured.
As multiple news agencies also reported, early on Aug. 18, five attackers drove an Audi A3 into several pedestrians in Cambrils, located 75 miles south of Barcelona. There was a shootout with the attackers. All five were shot dead – four of them at the scene, with the fifth dying later.
Four men have been arrested since the attack. Three are Moroccan citizens and another is Spanish. None were on authorities’ radar for potential terrorist links.
