Supporting latin talent with #MovementMonday

By Tere Siqueira

Gina Rodriguez started a campaign on her Instagram account to support Latino members of the television and film industry. Using the hashtag #MovementMonday and the help of the “55 million Latinos in this country”, the Jane the Virgin actress plans to create a more diverse Hollywood.
“I wanted to use my platform to recognize and honor the amazing Latinos that are working today”, Rodriguez told to Google. “We don’t live alone in this world. I needed to follow my own advice of helping each other. This is a way to discover and support other latinos”.
As a Latin American she desires to see more Latinos on screen. At the beginning of the year, the Oscar’s brought back the conversation about the lack of latino roles in the entertainment business.
According to a recent study released by the University of South California (USC) on Latinos in Film, only 5.2% of speaking roles are latinos. And at times, the roles that are available to Hispanic actors lean in to harmful stereotypes.
The actress has been working in this project for over a year. She has already show her support to not very known artists like the actress Aimee Carrero who gave voice to Disney’s first Latina princess. And also to more famous celebrities like the Puerto Rican singer Ricki Martin.
In addition, #MovementMonday wants to support not only actors but also the people that are behind the scenes, like the Mexican director, writer and producer Patricia Riggen. It is important to recognize the work of those behind scenes as well. Because they are the people that can create roles without harmful stereotypes.
Rodriguez has already made an amazing impact with this project. And also have been supported by a lot people in the industry.
