Make planning for the holidays a family affair

Commentary by Katherine Diaz

It’s that time of year to decide where and how to spend your precious holiday moments.
For some individuals, the holiday season is an exciting time, a time spent visiting with loved ones. For others, it’s a dreaded time, a time for having to choose between families when making holiday plans.
Some people attempt to accommodate all parties involved by, say, spending half of a holiday with one family and leaving halfway through the festivities to visit the other side of the family. Others alternate their holiday visits, spending some years with the maternal side of the family and other years with the paternal side.
Although those options seem reasonable, children’s feelings are often overlooked in such situations. It’s the holiday season, so make sure you’re spending it with your family. That means everyone within your immediate household.
If you’re a mother with youngsters who’s struggling to decide how to best spend your family’s time during the holidays, here are a few options to consider:
*Ask your children where they want to be: It’s in your best interests to find out, so your little ones aren’t sitting among family members with solemn faces. Ask where they’d like to go and plan from there. For example, if they want to visit their paternal relatives, plan to visit your spouse’s family that day, then tell your children that the next day will be solely for maternal family members.
*Stay home: There’s nothing better than being in the comfort of your own home, especially during cold weather. Stay home and celebrate with your children, so you’re not running around between cities – and essentially, spending little to no time with relatives because you’re busy rounding up your children.
*Talk to your spouse: Communication is key for any relationship – especially during the holidays. If your spouse is arguing about spending time with his family, sit down and have a reasonable conversation. Both of you will need to find a solution that’s not only in the best interests of both sides of the family, but also – and most importantly – the best interests of your children.
