How to weatherize your home

Commentary by Chara

Statistics show that more than 70 percent of Americans see an increase in their energy bills during the winter. But there are ways to prevent spikes in wintertime utility bills.
To avoid high utility costs and improve heating efficiency, it’s key to weatherize your home. Some steps you should take include the following:
*Secure windows and doors with seals: Windows and doors are the main sources of air leaks in any home. To seal spots with air leaks, use high-strength weather strips, which are available at many Kansas City area stores.
*Check doors for energy loss: In addition to installing weather strips, try installing door shoes or door sweeps to help keep heat inside. And make sure your doors close properly.
*Get your windows insulated: Insulating your windows will help you to keep heat inside. Window insulation kits are available at most local hardware stores and come with easy-to-follow instructions. If you have difficulty following the instructions, there are plenty of how-to videos on YouTube.
If you can’t afford to weatherize your home, there are area programs that can help you. KCP&L, for example, assists customers who meet income guidelines.
