A recent outbreak of wildfires in California has resulted in the evacuation of more than 98,000 people.
The wildfires, which began in early December in Southern California, are believed to have resulted from the hottest summer ever recorded in California. Because of the heat, trees and other vegetation dried out, becoming fuel for wildfires that spread because of the Santa Ana winds.
Most of the wildfires have been contained. However, at press time, a brush fire in Ventura County that quickly turned into a wildfire had been only 20 percent contained and caused more than $48.6 million in damages.
According to CNN, the outbreak of wildfires has resulted in more than 200,000 acres being burned – an area larger than New York City.
In addition to the damage and mass evacuation caused by the wildfires, smoke inhalation has become a potential threat for many Southern California residents who are staying in their homes.
Several organizations are conducting relief efforts to help the area recover. They include the following:
*Thomas Fire Fund: The fund has been established through a coalition of the United Way of Ventura County, American Red Cross of Ventura County and the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Services.
