January
The Kansas City Chiefs opened 2017 by finishing their 2016 regular-season schedule, defeating the then-San Diego Chargers 37-27 on Jan. 1 at Qualcomm Stadium.
Clemson University defeated the University of Alabama 35-31 on Jan. 9 at Raymond James Stadium in the College Football Playoff National Championship game.
The Chiefs’ season ended with an 18-16 loss to Pittsburgh on Jan. 15 in the AFC playoffs at Arrowhead Stadium.
Kansas City Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura died on Jan. 22 in his homeland, the Dominican Republic, in a vehicle accident. Ventura helped the Royals win back-to-back American League pennants and the 2015 World Series.
February
Trailing by 25 points in the second half, New England rallied to defeat Atlanta to win Super Bowl LI on Feb. 5 at NRG Stadium. With the 34-28 overtime victory, the Patriots won their second Super Bowl in three seasons and fifth overall. It was the second-ever NFL championship game to be decided in overtime and the first of the Super Bowl era, the first being the 1958 NFL championship game.
Fab Melo, 27, died on Feb. 11. The native Brazilian had been a standout basketball player at Syracuse University and briefly played in the NBA.
March
Sporting Kansas City tied D.C. United 0-0 in its MLS regular-season opener on March 4 at RFK Stadium. Sporting’s home opener against FC Dallas on March 11 at Children’s Mercy Park also ended 0-0.
The Big 12 Conference postseason men’s basketball tournament took place March 8-11 in the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo. The University of Kansas (KU) lost to TCU 85-82 on March 9 in the quarterfinals. Kansas State University reached the semifinals, losing to the University of West Virginia 51-50 on March 10. Iowa State University defeated West Virginia on March 11 for the championship.
In indoor soccer news, the Kansas City Comets’ 2016-17 season ended in the Major Arena Soccer League Central Division final, when they fell to the Milwaukee Wave in the best-of-three series 2-1. Milwaukee won the series finale 3-2 in overtime on March 12 at UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena.
Benedictine College of Atchison, Kan., competed in the NAIA Division I men’s national basketball tournament. The Ravens, whose roster included Latino C.J. Vallejo, lost on March 15 to The Master’s University 85-56. Texas Wesleyan University defeated Life University 86-76 on March 21 in Kansas City, Mo.’s Municipal Auditorium for the title.
KU played two games of the NCAA Division I national men’s basketball tournament at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo. The Jayhawks defeated Purdue University 98-66 in the Sweet 16 round on March 23. KU’s season ended on March 25 with a 74-60 loss to the University of Oregon at the Sprint Center in the Elite Eight round. By knocking off KU, Oregon advanced to its first Final Four since 1939.
April
On April 2, the University of South Carolina defeated Mississippi State University 67-55 in Dallas for its first NCAA Division I national women’s basketball title.
The Kansas City Royals opened the season by losing to the Minnesota Twins 7-1 on April 3 at Target Field.
The University of North Carolina edged Gonzaga University 71-65 on April 3 at University of Phoenix Stadium for the NCAA Division I men’s basketball title. It was the third national title for North Carolina coach Roy Williams, a former KU men’s head coach.
On April 10, the Royals lost their home opener, falling to Oakland 2-0 at Kauffman Stadium.
In golf, Englishman Justin Rose edged Spaniard Sergio Garcia in a sudden-death playoff to win the Masters Tournament, which concluded April 9 in Augusta, Ga.
Onetime pro football player Aaron Hernandez, 27, died on April 19. Hernandez, who had helped New England reach Super Bowl XLVI, was serving prison time when he committed suicide.
Luis Olmo, 97, died on April 28. The Puerto Rican native, who played baseball in the 1940s and early ’50s in the major leagues, was a trailblazer for Latino ballplayers.
The annual NFL Draft wrapped on April 29 in Philadelphia. The Chiefs attracted attention for trading up in the first round to draft quarterback Patrick Mahomes II.
May
In horse racing news, Always Dreaming won the Kentucky Derby on May 6 at Churchill Downs. The jockey for the Thoroughbred was native Puerto Rican John Velazquez.
NASCAR held races May 12-13 at Kansas Speedway. On May 6, Kyle Busch won the Toyota Tundra 250 at the Kansas City, Kan., racetrack. On May 13, Martin Truex Jr. won the Go Bowling 400. The Go Bowling 400 field included Mexican-born driver Daniel Suarez, who placed seventh; and Latino Aric Almirola, who had to be pulled from his car following a wreck that caused a race delay.
On May 19, the Kansas City T-Bones won their American Association of Independent Professional Baseball season and home opener, defeating the Lincoln Saltdogs 3-2 at CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan.
In Mexican soccer news, Guadalajara defeated UNAL 4-3 on aggregate goals for the Clausura 2017 Liga MX title. The first game of the two-stage final, held on May 25 at Estadio Universitario, ended 2-2. Guadalajara won the second game, held on May 28 at Estadio Chivas, 2-1.
June
Golfer Roberto De Vicenzo, a native of Argentina, died at age 94 on June 1.
In hockey news, the Pittsburgh Penguins repeated as NHL Stanley Cup champions by defeating Nashville in the Stanley Cup Finals. Pittsburgh capped the best-of-seven series on June 11 with a 2-0 Game 6 win at Bridgestone Arena.
The Golden State Warriors won their second NBA title in three seasons by defeating the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Finals. Golden State capped the best-of-seven series on June 12 with a 129-120 Game 5 win in Oakland, Calif.
July
British cyclist Chris Froome repeated as Tour de France champion – his third straight Tour de France title and fourth in five seasons. Colombian Rigoberto Uran was runner-up in the general classification standings. The 21-stage race concluded on July 23 in Paris, with Dutchman Groenewegen winning the final stage.
In football news, the Chiefs formally introduced Brett Veach as their new general manager on July 24 at Arrowhead. Veach, who replaced John Dorsey, had been named to the position on July 10.
August
The Chiefs opened the preseason with a 27-17 loss to San Francisco on Aug. 11 at Arrowhead. They finished the preseason 2-2, capping their preseason schedule by defeating Tennessee 30-6 on Aug. 31 at Arrowhead.
September
The T-Bones finished their season by defeating the St. Paul Saints 9-8 on Sept. 4 at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. They finished 57-43, but failed to make the American Association playoffs.
The Chiefs opened the NFL regular season on Sept. 7 with a 42-27 comeback win over defending Super Bowl champion New England at Gillette Stadium. They then held on for a 27-20 win over Philadelphia on Sept. 17 at Arrowhead in their regular-season home opener.
Legendary boxer Jake LaMotta, depicted in the 1980 biopic “Raging Bull,” starring Robert De Niro, died on Sept. 19.
Sparked by a goal apiece from Latif Blessing and Daniel Salloi, Sporting Kansas City defeated the New York Red Bulls on Sept. 20 at Children’s Mercy Park to win the U.S. Open Cup – Sporting’s third Open Cup title in five seasons.
In other Sporting news, the “boys in blue” saw their undefeated streak at home end on Sept. 30 with a 1-0 loss to Vancouver. Sporting had won or tied 24 straight games at Children’s Mercy Park before dropping the MLS regular-season matchup.
October
The Royals’ season ended on Oct. 1 with a 14-2 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks at Kauffman Stadium. They finished 80-82 – their first losing season since 2012.
There were three races the weekend of Oct. 20-22 at Kansas Speedway. Michael Self won the Kansas ARCA 150 on Oct. 20. Christopher Bell then won the Kansas Lottery 300, a 300-mile, 200-lap NASCAR Xfinity Series race, on Oct. 21. Martin Truex Jr. won the Hollywood Casino 400 on Oct. 22. Drivers in the Hollywood Casino 400 included Mexican Daniel Suarez, who had to leave the race because of an accident.
Sporting Kansas City lost 2-1 to Real Salt Lake on Oct. 22 at Rio Tinto Stadium to finish MLS regular-season play. Sporting then fell to Houston 1-0 on Oct. 26 at BBVA Compass Stadium in the knockout stage of the MLS Cup playoffs. Native Honduran Alberth Elis scored the game-winning goal for Houston.
November
In baseball news, the Houston Astros won their first World Series. They capped their championship run on Nov. 1 by defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-1 at Dodger Stadium to win the best-of-seven game series 4-3. Latino George Springer was named Most Valuable Player. Houston’s roster included former Royal and native Puerto Rican Carlos Beltran.
In indoor soccer news, the Kansas City Comets opened their 2017-18 season by defeating the St. Louis Ambush 10-8 on Nov. 4 at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena.
KU opened its 2017-18 men’s basketball season by defeating Tennessee State University 92-56 on Nov. 10 at Allen Fieldhouse.
Tennis legend and native Ecuadorian Pancho Segura, 96, died on Nov. 18.
NASCAR driver Martin Truex Jr. won the Monster Energy Cup championship by winning the Ford EcoBoost 400 on Nov. 19 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
The CBE Hall of Fame Classic concluded on Nov. 21 at the Sprint Center. Baylor University capped the annual men’s basketball tournament by defeating Creighton University 65-59. UCLA edged the University of Wisconsin 72-70 for third place.
December
On Dec. 2, Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City, Mo., hosted the NCAA Division II national championship soccer games. The University of Central Missouri completed a perfect season and won its first women’s soccer title by defeating Carson-Newman University. Tied 1-1 after regulation and two overtime periods, it was decided by a shootout, with the Jennies winning 5-3 on penalty kicks. The men’s title game also went to a shootout, with the University of Charleston (W.Va.) defeating Lynn University on penalty kicks.
In men’s basketball news, the University of Washington knocked off then-undefeated KU 74-65 on Dec. 6 at the Sprint Center.
Toronto FC won its first MLS Cup title by defeating Seattle 2-0 on Dec. 9 at BMO Field in a rematch of the 2016 MLS Cup championship game.
On Dec. 16, the University of Nebraska defeated the University of Florida at the Sprint Center for the NCAA Division I volleyball title. It was the second national title in three seasons for the Cornhuskers and fifth overall.
Also on Dec. 16, Texas A & M University-Commerce won its first NCAA Division II national football title by defeating the University of West Florida 37-27 at Children’s Mercy Park.
Legendary American sportscaster Dick Enberg, 82, died on Dec. 21.
The Chiefs qualified for the AFC playoffs when they defeated Miami 29-13 Sunday afternoon (Dec. 24) at Arrowhead. The win gave them their second straight AFC West Division title – the first time in franchise history they’ve won back-to-back division championships, as Chiefs coach Andy Reid mentioned afterward. They’ll finish their regular season – and close 2017 – this Sunday (Dec. 31) against Denver at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.
