The recent arrest in California of Andres Sanchez (see related story) provides a lesson to all motorists, regardless of where they live: If you’re ever pulled over, it’s important to determine whether the individual doing so is a legitimate law enforcement officer.
Some ways to verify the officer and the officer’s vehicle are legitimate include the following:
*Check the vehicle: If the vehicle has police markings, it’s generally safe to assume the person driving it is a real police officer. If it’s not clearly marked, identify what model the vehicle is. And if possible, look at the condition of the vehicle. Generally, U.S. police officers drive a limited number of vehicle models. Usually, they’re in good condition, too.
*Call 911: You have the right to call 911 and verify the identity of the officer who has stopped you. By giving the dispatcher a detailed location of where you are and a description of the alleged police vehicle, the dispatcher can check with the local police or sheriff’s department to determine if the person who has pulled you over is a legitimate police officer.
*Ask to see proper identification: An officer must show you his or her badge upon request. No real law enforcement officers should refuse to do this.
*Get to know your local officers: If possible, familiarize yourself with what your local law enforcement officers look like.

El reciente arresto en California de Andrés Sánchez (ver historia relacionada) brinda una lección a todos los automovilistas, independientemente de dónde vivan: si alguna vez te detienen, es importante determinar si el individuo que lo hace es un oficial legítimo.
Algunas formas de verificar que el oficial y el vehículo del oficial sean legítimos incluyen los siguientes:
