Women’s Month: Romero sharing passion for God and community in leadership position

By Chara
In 1977, Colombian Sylvia Romero found a passion for helping others during a visit to the United States.
In 2018, she’s pursuing her passion in her career.
Romero serves as the director of the Center of Grace in Olathe, Kan. She started working part time at the center in November 2000. Now, she coordinates all the programs and ministries there. Romero’s duties include overseeing the staff, ministry coordinators and volunteers.
“I also work to maintain great relationships with our non-profit partners and tenants, like (the) Boys and Girls Club, Johnson County Community College (Kan.), Pathway to Hope, Greenbush Northeast Kansas Migrant IDR, and Deaf International Community Church,” she said. “I also have enjoyed building partnerships with the Olathe School District, the city of Olathe, Catholic Charities, (the) Salvation Army, El Centro, Johnson County Health and Human Services, different congregations, service organizations and businesses in town.”
Partnership programs that Romero oversees include English classes for adults in partnership with Johnson County Community College and a migrant preschool for children.
There are other services in which Romero is involved. They include free health screenings; a medical loaning closet; free community dinners, held every two weeks; and a community garden.
“I love being able to help all kinds of people – and, of course, being a Hispanic immigrant woman myself, I am especially glad to be able to help my fellow Hispanics,” she said. “We do not only have a language in common, but also very similar values, history and culture.”
Romero feels that God has blessed her as a Hispanic woman with the many opportunities she has to serve.
“I believe that, as women, we can make a difference by coming together and helping each other,” she said. “I believe we can make a difference because we want what is best for our families, for our children and for our communities.”
For Romero, helping others means sharing God’s love with others.
“Helping one another is something that we are called to do by God and that we each (should) do, regardless of our circumstances,” she said. “If we all reach out and help one another, our world will change and become a better place for all of us, including our children and grandchildren.”
Romero is married, with four children and five grandchildren. Her hobbies include listening to music, going out to eat, reading, gardening and spending time in her hammock. In addition to her job, Romero serves with several organizations, including the Olathe Latino Coalition, the Olathe Boys and Girls Club advisory board and the Johnson County Latina Leadership Network.
In honor of March as Women’s History Month, Romero has a message she’d like to offer to help empower other women.
“The best way to live is to dedicate your life to loving God and loving each other,” she said. “(I’d also like to say) that we have a lot to be proud of as Latinas – and that to make a difference, we need to work together.”
