Spanish speakers in Kansas who want to learn more about the Church of Christ, Scientist (a.k.a., Christian Science) will have two opportunities to do so within the next few weeks.
Heloisa Rivas – a native Brazilian who grew up as a Christian Scientist and offers lectures in five languages across the globe – will offer lectures on April 21 and 22.
“I’m thankful for the opportunity to speak in Spanish to the Latin community,” she told Dos Mundos. “I hope they come to listen to (my message of) God’s love and how the Christian Science church has a response to any … (question) or necessity of the Latin community.”
Her first lecture, “Health is a Spiritual Reality,” will begin at 2 p.m. in English and 3:30 p.m. in Spanish on Saturday, April 21st, in the Carmack Room of the Johnson County Central Resources Library, located at 9875 W. 87th Street in Overland Park Kansas. The other lecture, titled “Stranger, You Are the Guest of God,” will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 22nd at the Topeka and Shawnee County Library, located at 1515 S.W. 10th Avenue Topeka Kansas. Both lectures are open to the public and free childcare will be provided for all sessions.
“In ‘Stranger, You Are the Guest of God,’ we will talk a lot about God and … immigration problems,” Rivas said. “God doesn’t care about only one group. He blesses all (people) the same…. We will welcome you full of love and hope our message gets to your heart.”
Christian Science is a branch of Christianity that focuses on the teachings of the Bible. Founded in the late 19th century by Mary Baker Eddy, the movement developed with the purpose of offering a way to see God as a means of support, instead of someone or something to fear.
After experiencing a tragic event in her life, Eddy learned that by studying God’s principles, people could find the harmony of Jesus in their own lives. Her tragic event inspired her to write the book “Science and Health,” in which she explained her discoveries about how we can understand God both spiritually and scientifically. The book has become the central text of the Christian Science denomination.
But according to Rivas, Eddy’s book shouldn’t replace the Bible. In fact, they both need to be studied together, she explained.
In 1892, Eddy founded the first Christian Science church in Boston. Today, there are many Christian Science branch churches across the globe. Rather, than having a minister to preside over services, the church services are conducted by two people who read; not only from the Bible but also from Science and Health.
Christian Science churches offer services in Spanish. Most of the books published by the church have been translated into Spanish, including “Science and Health.”

Los hispanohablantes de Kansas que deseen aprender más acerca de la Iglesia de Cristo, Científico (es decir, la Ciencia Cristiana) tendrán dos oportunidades para hacerlo en las próximas semanas.
Heloisa Rivas, una brasileña que creció como científica cristiana y ofrece conferencias en cinco idiomas en todo el mundo, ofrecerá conferencias el 21 y 22 de abril.
«Estoy agradecida por la oportunidad de hablar en español a la comunidad latina», dijo a Dos Mundos. «Espero que vengan a escuchar el mensaje del amor de Dios y cómo la iglesia de la Ciencia Cristiana tiene una respuesta a cualquier … pregunta o necesidad de la comunidad latina”.
Su primera conferencia, “La salud es una realidad espiritual”, comenzará a las 2 p.m. en inglés y a las 3:30 p.m. en español el sábado, 21 de abril en el Carmack Room de Johnson County Central Resources Library, ubicada en el 9875 de la calle W 87 en Overland Park Kansas. La otra conferencia, titulada “Extranjero, eres el invitado de Dios”, comenzará a las 6:30 p.m. el domingo, 22 de abril en Topeka and Shawnee County Library, ubicada en el 1515 de la avenida S.W. 10 en Topeka Kansas. Ambas conferencias están abiertas al público y se ofrece cuidado grátis de niños para todas las sesiones.

La Ciencia Cristiana es una rama del cristianismo que se enfoca en las enseñanzas de la Biblia. Fundada a fines del siglo XIX por Mary Baker Eddy, el movimiento se desarrolló con el propósito de ofrecer una manera de ver a Dios como un medio de apoyo, en lugar de alguien o algo a lo que temer.
Después de experimentar un evento trágico en su vida, Eddy aprendió que al estudiar los principios de Dios, las personas podían encontrar la armonía de Jesús en sus propias vidas. Su trágico suceso la inspiró a escribir el libro «Ciencia y Salud», en el que explicó sus descubrimientos sobre Dios y cómo se puede entender a Dios de forma espiritual y científica. Pero según Rivas, el libro de Eddy no debe reemplazar a la Biblia. De hecho, ambos deben estudiarse juntos, explicó.
En 1892, Eddy fundó la primera iglesia de la Ciencia Cristiana en Boston. Hoy en día, hay muchas iglesias afiliadas a la Ciencia Cristiana en todo el mundo. En lugar de tener un ministro que presida los servicios, la iglesia realiza servicios que es conducida por dos personas que leen; no sólo de la Biblia pero también de Ciencia y Salud.
Las iglesias de la Ciencia Cristiana ofrecen servicios en español. La mayoría de los libros publicados por la iglesia han sido traducidos al español, incluyendo «Ciencia y Salud».
