Death toll remains uncertain
On May 18, a Cubana de Aviacion plane crashed, leaving more than 100 people dead.
Cuban authorities haven’t confirmed the number of people who died. Some media outlets recently reported that 104 passengers were confirmed dead. But as of Tuesday (May 22), some media agencies were reporting that 111 people were confirmed dead.
CNN stated that the crewmembers were Mexican nationals. All of them died, too.
The accident left three survivors, who are in critical condition. Cuba TV identified them as women.
The Boeing 737-200 was headed from La Havana to Holguin in Cuba when it crashed. At press time, the cause or causes of the accident remained unknown.
Leased by Cubana de Aviacion, the plane was owned by Areolineas Damojh, also known as Global Air, a Mexican company. According to The New York Times, it was an old plane. The newspaper also reported that the owners of the plane claimed the airplane had passed a November 2017 safety inspection.
This isn’t the first time that Cubana de Aviacion has been linked to an accident. In 2010, 68 passengers died when one of its planes crashed in Cuba.
Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel issued a statement after the accidents.
“On behalf of the government and the party (Cuban Communist), we are very sorry, and we join (in sharing our) … condolences (with) the families,” he said.
Other leaders issued statements, too, including Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto (Peña Nieto in Spanish).
“Mexico expresses its sincere condolences to the people and government of #Cuba for the terrible plane crash that occurred today in La Havana,” Pena Nieto tweeted. “Our solidarity with the relatives of all the victims who sadly lost their lives.”
The Mexican Embassy in Cuba has received instructions to support the Cuban government, Pena Nieto stated.

“En nombre del gobierno y del partido (comunista cubano), lo sentimos mucho, y nos unimos al compartir nuestras condolencias con las familias”, dijo.
Otros líderes también emitieron declaraciones, incluyendo el presidente mexicano Enrique Peña Nieto.
“México expresa sus más sinceras condolencias al pueblo y al gobierno de #Cuba por el terrible accidente aéreo que ocurrió hoy en La Habana”, tuiteó Pena Nieto. “Nuestra solidaridad con los familiares de todas las víctimas que tristemente perdieron la vida”.
La Embajada de México en Cuba recibió instrucciones para apoyar al gobierno cubano, afirmó Peña Nieto.
