The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Kansas recently announced the launch of Election Protection, a non-partisan, statewide effort aimed at safeguarding the voting process.
The organization is partnering with Kansas City area law firm Stinson Leonard Street LLC to lead an effort to provide voters with hotlines to report voting irregularities, and field programs to offer on-site assistance at polling places in target areas.
Lauren Bonds, ACLU of Kansas legal director, said the program will be an additional source of support for voters, particularly all underrepresented voters.
“It’s an effort to help voters who might encounter problems when voting, from being at the wrong polling place to being denied (the right) to vote,” she said.
Although programs like this have been in place for a long time in other states, this is the first of its kind for the ACLU of Kansas. Bonds said it was the result of complaints from past elections.
“We’ve been receiving a number of complaints and calls in past elections,” Bonds said. “Now, we have a centralized way to report these issues.”
The Election Protection program is recruiting volunteers to answer the hotlines and provide on-site assistance to voters at polling places in certain areas. To volunteer or for more information, visit www.aclukansas.org.
For the primaries in August, Bonds said on-site assistance will be offered to voters in the following counties: Johnson, Wyandotte, Sedgwick, Shawnee, Douglas, Lyon, Ford, Finney, Seward and Reno. The hotlines will be answered live on the day of the primaries, Aug. 7; and the day of the general elections, Nov. 6. During the weeks leading up to both elections, calls will go to voicemail and be returned as soon as possible.

*1-(888)-VE-Y-VOTA (839-8682): This hotline provides bilingual assistance (English and Spanish) and is administered by NALEO Educational Fund.
*1-(888)-API-VOTE (274-8683): This hotline provides assistance in Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Bengali, Hindi, Urdu and Tagalog, and is administered by APIA Vote and Asian Americans Advancing Justice (AAJC).
ACLU de Kansas lanza iniciativa ‘Protección Electoral’
La Unión Americana de Libertades Civiles (ACLU por sus siglas en Ingles) de Kansas anunció recientemente el lanzamiento de Protección Electoral, un esfuerzo no partidista a nivel estatal destinado a salvaguardar el proceso de votación.
La organización se está juntando con la firma de abogados Stinson Leonard Street LLC, del área de Kansas City, para liderar este programa que busca dar a los votantes líneas directas para reportar irregularidades al momento de votar, así como también ofrecer programas de campo para asistir en el lugar en los lugares de votación en áreas de importancia.
Lauren Bonds, directora legal de la ACLU de Kansas, dijo que el programa será una fuente de apoyo adicional para los votantes, especialmente para los votantes menos representados.
“Es un esfuerzo para ayudar a quienes encuentren problemas al ir a votar, desde estar en la urna equivocada hasta ser negados el derecho a votar,” dijo ella.
Aunque programas como este han estado en vigencia en otros estados por mucho tiempo, este es el primero de su tipo para el ACLU de Kansas. Bonds dijo que esto fue el resultado de quejas en elecciones pasadas.
“Hemos estado recibiendo un número de quejas y llamadas en elecciones pasadas,” dijo Bonds. “Ahora tendremos una manera centralizada de reportar estas irregularidades.”

Para las primarias en agosto, Bonds dijo que asistencia en el lugar de votación será ofrecida en los siguientes condados: Johnson, Wyandotte, Sedgwick, Shawnee, Douglas, Lyon, Ford, Finney, Seward y Reno. Las líneas directas serán respondidas en vivo el día de las primarias el 7 de agosto; y el día de las elecciones generales, el 6 de noviembre. Durante las semanas previas a ambas elecciones, las llamadas irán al buzón de voz y serán devueltas tan pronto como sea posible.
