Students at Wyandotte High use Dos Mundos to practice Spanish

By Angie Baldelomar

A Spanish teacher at Wyandotte High School is using her class for more than just learning the language.
Luz Soper, originally from Colombia, teaches Spanish to Hispanic students at Wyandotte. One of her objectives is to get her students at the Kansas City, Kansas, school closer to their Hispanic roots.
“I put a lot of emphasis on the love for our Hispanic roots, on the love for the Hispanic community,” she said.
Recently, students in Soper’s class gave presentations in commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, which was observed Monday (Jan. 21). The presentations were short and in Spanish, and they served as a way to get students more comfortable with their speaking abilities.
A big part of Soper’s teaching process includes Dos Mundos. She said the students use copies of the newspaper to practice reading.
“It’s a great tool because there’s a lot of new vocabulary they don’t know,” she said.
Gyssell Hernandez, an 11th-grader who is one of Soper’s students, said she has gotten closer to her parents since she started taking Soper’s class.
“(It) has helped a lot with my parents,” Hernandez said. “They don’t speak English and now I can serve as a translator.”
Hernandez spoke Spanish before taking the class, but she struggled with reading and writing in Spanish. Now that she’s in Spanish 2, she can do both things.
Like her, Soper knows there are many other students who already speak the language, but need more help with pronunciation, reading and writing to become fully fluent.
Soper also puts emphasis on bilingualism as a great tool to have in their careers after high school.
“(Spanish) strengthens their relationship with their families and encourages them to be bilingual,” she said.

“No hablan inglés y puedo comunicarme y ayudarles a comunicarse”.
