Latinas honored at Nuestra Latina Awards

The contributions of Hispanic women to the Kansas City area were honored at the Nuestra Latina Awards 2019 on Aug. 29.
Hosted by the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Greater Kansas City, the ceremony, in its second edition, took place at the University of Kansas Edwards Campus and recognized the success of Latinas in the community.
The eight honorees and the awards they received were as follows: Dos Mundos co-founder Clara Reyes, Lifetime Achievement Award; Angela Cervantes, Arts/Literature Award; Guadalupe Dean, Philanthropy Award; Adriana Pecina, Health & Wellness Award; Angelique Rodriguez-Gunion, Business/Entrepreneurship Award; Janice Martinez, Military/Law Enforcement Award; and Diana Sofia Acevedo, STEM/Education Award.
Families and friends of the awardees attended the ceremony. Each honoree gave a brief speech.
Ahead of the ceremony, several honorees highlighted the importance of awards like this that recognize the work and impact Latinas have in the community.
“We can all set an example or be someone a young person can look up to,” Martinez said beforehand. “Having that recognition and being an example for not only Latinas but any other immigrant that comes to this country … is very important.”


Latinas del área reconocidas en los Premios Nuestra Latina

Las contribuciones de las mujeres hispanas al área de Kansas City fueron honradas en los Premios Nuestra Latina 2019 el 29 de agosto.
Organizado por la Cámara de Comercio Hispana del Gran Kansas City, la ceremonia, en su segunda edición, tuvo lugar en el campus Edwards de la Universidad de Kansas y reconoció el éxito de las latinas en la comunidad.
Las ocho galardonadas y los premios que recibieron fueron los siguientes: la cofundadora de Dos Mundos, Clara Reyes, Premio a la Trayectoria; Ángela Cervantes, Premio de Arte/Literatura; Guadalupe Dean, Premio Filantropía; Adriana Pecina, Premio Salud y Bienestar; Angelique Rodríguez-Gunion, Premio Empresa/Emprendimiento; Janice Martínez, Premio Militar/Fuerzas del Orden; y Diana Sofía Acevedo, Premio STEM/Educación.
Las familias y amigos de las premiadas asistieron a la ceremonia. Cada homenajeado pronunció un breve discurso.
Antes de la ceremonia, varias galardonadas destacaron la importancia de premios como este que reconocen el trabajo y el impacto que las latinas tienen en la comunidad.
“Todos podemos dar el ejemplo o ser alguien a quien una persona joven pueda admirar”, dijo Martínez de antemano. “Tener ese reconocimiento y ser un ejemplo no solo para las latinas sino para cualquier otro inmigrante que venga a este país … es muy importante”.
