On Sept. 25, multiple news outlets reported the Trump administration and the Honduran government had signed an agreement to combat undocumented immigration throughout Central America, as announced by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
In a press release, the DHS stated the new deal would increase collaboration between the United States and Honduras.
“These arrangements (that) follow the signing of a cooperative agreement will further enhance (the) asylum and protection capacity in Honduras and provide protection for vulnerable populations as close to home as possible,” Kevin K. McAleenan, acting secretary, stated in the release. “DHS will continue to confront irregular migration with its international partners to improve safety and prosperity in the Central America region, mitigating the ‘push and pull’ factors that contribute to the security and humanitarian crisis on our Southwest border.”
The agreement will focus on strengthening immigration enforcement to impede irregular immigration flows from Central America, such as the caravan travelers who drew international media attention in 2018. Moreover, the U.S. and Honduran governments will work together to conduct criminal investigations targeting gangs, human smuggling and trafficking networks.
According to CNN, the agreement could allow the United States to send asylum seekers back to Honduras if they did not first claim asylum when passing through the country en route to the U.S.-Mexico border.
In addition to this agreement, the U.S. Department of Labor and Honduras have signed an agreement to improve non-immigrant visa programs.
“With this agreement, the U.S. and Honduras put into action a joint effort to address expanding opportunities (for) legal immigration from Honduras to support U.S. business interests, reducing non-tariff trade barriers to promote foreign direct investment, trade facilitation and customs enhancement,” the press release stated.

Honduras y Estados Unidos firman acuerdo de inmigración
El 25 de septiembre, varios medios de comunicación informaron que la administración de Trump y el gobierno hondureño habían firmado un acuerdo para combatir la inmigración indocumentada a través de Centroamérica, como lo anunció el Departamento de Seguridad Nacional de EE.UU. (DHS, por sus siglas en inglés).
En un comunicado de prensa, el DHS indicó que el nuevo acuerdo aumentaría la colaboración entre Estados Unidos y Honduras.
“Estos acuerdos (que) luego de la firma de un acuerdo de cooperación mejorarán aún más (el) asilo y la capacidad de protección en Honduras y brindarán protección a las poblaciones vulnerables lo más cerca posible de su hogar”, declaró Kevin K. McAleenan, secretario interino, en el comunicado. “El DHS continuará confrontando la migración irregular con sus socios internacionales para mejorar la seguridad y la prosperidad en la región de América Central, mitigando los factores de ‘empuje y jale’ que contribuyen a la crisis humanitaria y de seguridad en nuestra frontera suroeste”.
El acuerdo se enfocará en fortalecer la aplicación de la ley de inmigración para impedir los flujos irregulares de inmigración de Centroamérica, como los viajeros de caravanas que llamaron la atención de los medios internacionales en 2018. Además, los gobiernos de Estados Unidos y Honduras trabajarán juntos para llevar a cabo investigaciones criminales contra pandillas, redes de contrabando y tráfico de personas.
Según CNN, el acuerdo podría permitir que Estados Unidos envíe a los solicitantes de asilo de regreso a Honduras si no solicitaron asilo primero al pasar por el país en ruta hacia la frontera entre México y Estados Unidos.
Además de este acuerdo, el Departamento de Trabajo de EE.UU. y el país de Honduras han firmado un acuerdo para mejorar los programas de visas de no inmigrantes.
“Con este acuerdo, Estados Unidos y Honduras pusieron en marcha un esfuerzo conjunto para abordar la expansión de las oportunidades (para) la inmigración legal desde Honduras para apoyar los intereses comerciales de Estados Unidos, reduciendo las barreras comerciales no arancelarias para promover la inversión extranjera directa, la facilitación del comercio y la mejora de las aduanas”, señaló el comunicado de prensa.
