The Trump administration announced huge fee increases for immigration applications. This news should push you to hurry up and file your immigration paperwork. To make matters worse, fee waivers will no longer be available for Citizenship and Renewing your permanent residency. Fees could increase by the end of the year. Hopefully, this terrible policy will also be stopped by the courts, but you should take action now just in case.
The official announcement will come this Thursday followed by a 30-day comment period. In regular times, the Department of Homeland Security should read and consider the comments. That has not been the case with the Trump administration.
Currently, there are three levels of filing fees for US Citizenship (naturalization) depending on your income. If you are below 150% of the poverty line you pay $0, if between 150% and 200% you pay $405 and if over 200% you pay $725. Under the new rules, everyone would pay $1200 including biometrics.
In addition to increasing current fees, the proposal introduces new fees for applications for asylum – $50 and for DACA – $275. Currently, there is no fee for asylum and only four other countries in the world charge a fee. DACA applicants only pay for the work permit right now. The new total for DACA would be $795 – up from $495 now.
