Health agencies encourage parents to vaccinate their children

By Roberta Pardo

One of the best ways for parents to protect their children is by ensuring they have their vaccination shots, health care experts advise.
Vaccination shots provide immunization. This immunity is the body’s way of preventing disease. But immune systems are not fully developed at birth, so babies tend to face a greater risk of becoming infected and getting seriously ill.
That’s where vaccines come in. They “help teach the immune system to learn how to defend against germs” and protect babies by “helping build up their natural defenses,” the U.S. Centers for Disease and Control Prevention (CDC) explains in its website.
“Vaccines use very small amounts of antigens to help your child’s immune system recognize and learn to fight serious diseases,” the CDC website states. “Antigens are the parts of a germ that cause the body’s immune system to go to work.”
The CDC also states that unvaccinated children run the risk of seriously illnesses or even death from diseases such as whooping cough or the measles. According to the CDC, the United States had more than 1,200 cases of the measles in 2019 – the most cases reported in America in 27 years and since measles had been declared eliminated in 2000.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) offers five reasons for parents to vaccinate their children:

*Doing so can save lives: “Some diseases that once injured or killed thousands of children have been eliminated completely,” with others close to being eliminated, because of vaccines, the HHS states on its website.
*It’s effective and safe to do so: Vaccines are only given to children after a long and careful review from a myriad of healthcare professionals such as scientists and doctors. Even though vaccines might have some side effects, the symptoms tend to be mild and soon disappear, the HHS claims.
*Vaccinations help protect loved ones: Bein fully vaccinated helps prevent diseases from spreading to family, friends and community members.
*Immunization can be a time- and money-saver: With children avoiding illnesses because of vaccinations, parents can avoid huge long-term expenses connected to disability care and other medical-related bills. And often, vaccinations are often free or inexpensive. As proof, the HHS mentions Vaccines for Children, a federally funded program that allows the children of low-income families to receive free vaccinations.
*Future generations will be protected: As was mentioned earlier, the reduction and elimination of many diseases is because of vaccinations. As an example, the HHS mentions the global elimination of smallpox.
“If we continue vaccinating now, and vaccinating completely, parents in the future maybe be able trust that some diseases of today will no longer be around to harm their children in the future,” the HHS writes.
