Local event honoring Hispanic heroes

By Katherine Diaz
This year’s Chicano Voices event will feature individuals who’ve impacted the Hispanic community locally – and in some cases, nationally.
The second annual event will open on Friday (May 5) and run through June 24 at the Mattie Rhodes Center in Kansas City, Mo. It’ll honor local figures who’ve made impacts in economic development, cultural arts, healthcare and advocacy.
“Last year, the event was about bringing attention to the history of the Chicano movement and falling in that same theme of remembering a rich history and educating individuals about significant milestones within our Hispanic history,” said Mattie Rhodes John Fierro, president and CEO. “We thought it would be fitting to identify some local heroes.”
Individuals being honored include Primitivo Garcia, Ruben Garcia, Hector Barreto Sr., Mary Lona, Nellie Lozano and Anna Riojas. Garcia was a young man who intervened in a potential robbery, was injured by gunshot wound and died a week or so later. This year marks the 50th anniversary of his passing. Fierro hopes this year’s event will help the community understand Garcia’s heroism
“It’s interesting because his sister – who interacts regularly with students at the school that bears his name on the Westside – on one occasion shared this story about her brother,” Fierro said. “And … some of the kids responded, ‘Well I hope he’s O.K.!’ – not knowing that he is no longer with us. So I think that’s a good example where not everyone knows his story and we need to continue to keep that front and center.”
The other individuals were influential in other ways. Barreto, for example, founded the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Greater Kansas City and the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, in which he had an influential role in politics.
“And then we have Ruben Garcia, who was a native of the Westside, who was a very – extremely – talented muralist, who unfortunately died a few years back,” Fierro stated.
For this event, Fierro and his colleagues wanted to balance out the group to feature three men and three women. Toward that end, they opted to include Anna Riojas. According to Fierro, Riojas was a Latina Hillary Clinton and Elizabeth Warren and successful businesswoman who was killed in a boating accident.
“The other two individuals include Mary Lona, who was a huge advocate of the Mexicans and those individuals living in poverty,” Fierro said. “She would also eventually go on to become an entrepreneur. She established – in my understanding – the first Hispanic business directory called La Lista Latina.”
Lozano, the final individual being honored, was dedicated to preserving the Mexican culture through dance.
“The purpose is to remember our history and to educate people about the significant contributions made by key individuals – and those six are all local individuals,” Fierro stated.
