[tab]For 35 years, La Fonda El Taquito has been a favorite of many Kansas City area diners – regardless of its location.

The Mexican restaurant has changed location a few times since opening in 1979. It started at 17th and Summit streets in Kansas City, Mo. According to co-owner Maria Chaurand, the place was established by her parents, Agustin Medina and Teresa Garcia Medina.

“They started selling tacos,” she said. “They were the first ones … making tacos in KC.”

Eventually, La Fonda moved from 17th Street to 39th Street. But in 1999, it relocated from 39th Street to Southwest Boulevard in Kansas City, Mo.’s Westside neighborhood.

“Thanks to my parents, we have this gift,” Chaurand said. “Thanks (to) God, we have been doing fine. All my family has been involved in the business, but one of the main contributors has been my sister Sandra, who took care of it for many years. Then, she asked for help and I came into the picture.”

Chaurand said she and her sister “have a very good relationship.”

“Trust me, it is not easy to have a family business – and we have managed just fine,” Chaurand said.

Just as the family business has passed from generation to generation, so has its clientele.

“It is fantastic that now we see our (original) customers bringing their families,” Chaurand said. “They used to come here when they were studying and they came to eat $1 tacos. Now, they come and bring their wives and children – and it is just something incredible.”

To Chaurand, the service and the food’s flavor are what set La Fonda apart from its competitors – and what keep generations of customers coming back.

“With … time, I (have) realized that we have over 200 Mexican restaurants in Kansas City, but every one (of them) is different,” she said. “In our case, we like to treat … our customers (well). We like to serve them. We really work on getting food on their tables fresh and delicious.

“Our pricing is affordable and we just try to make them feel like they are at home,” she added.

Some of La Fonda’s dishes include chiles rellenos, mole, albondigas, sopes, enchiladas and caldo de pollo. Chaurand’s favorites are the carnitas tacos.

“It is my dad’s recipe,” she said. “We do have delicious recipes and my sister Sandra has contributed a lot to them, but the carnitas are my favorites.”

The restaurant also serves breakfast and has daily specials.

La Fonda is open 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday, 9:30 a.m.-10 p.m. Friday-Saturday and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Sundays. It’s located at 800 Southwest Blvd.
