Shop for back-to-school supplies and stay within your budget

Commentary by Chara

With just a few weeks left before the school year begins, parents and children are buying clothes and school supplies. To help parents stay within their means while buying those items, we at Dos Mundos have done our homework to provide the following shopping tips:

*Plan and set up a budget: Calculate how much money you have to get ready for the new school year. On a piece of paper, divide everything by sections, including clothes, school supplies, immunization fees and miscellaneous items. In each section, assign an amount you plan to spend.

Within each section, list all the items needed. Under the clothing section, for example, list jeans, T-shirts, shoes, etc. Under school supplies, list notebooks, pens, pencils, highlighters, pencil sharpeners, calculators and scissors.

*Research prices: Once your list is ready, start researching prices. If you don’t have a computer for researching prices online, visit your local library or use your smartphone. If you’re anti-technology, look at the back-to-school flyers stores send you to research for bargains. You also can research pricing by visiting stores that sell school supplies and clothes.

Once you finish researching, you’re ready to compare prices and get the best deal for each item. Write down and compare the various prices next to each item. And remember, the earlier you start with your list, the more time you’ll have to research – and the less stress you’ll have while doing your shopping.

*Consider your children’s opinions: Children are the ones who go to school, so ask for their opinions and make them feel involved in the process before you go shopping. To keep your children happy, try to consider “cool” trends or items they like. If you know what your children like, it’ll be difficult to disappoint them.

If you can’t afford the latest clothing styles or school supplies, look for materials such as cloth that can provide decorative touches to make them look trendy. In addition, look for coupons that might save you money, so you can buy new items your children might use at school and enjoy.

Good luck forming your budget. Remember to be organized and do your research – and have fun with it.
