Para el pastor de la iglesia Ríos de Agua Viva, Herminio Leal, el momento en que su parroquia se derrumbó fue un evento dividido entre la tragedia y la gracia.
La iglesia de Kansas City, Mo, estaba albergando la escuela bíblica de vacaciones para 44 niños, cuando, alrededor de las 10 de la mañana del 7 de agosto, la estructura comenzó a derrumbarse sin previo aviso. Alrededor de las 5 de la tarde, Leal dio una rueda de prensa ante las cámaras de noticias sobre el estado de los acontecimientos y aún no estaba seguro de cómo se sostendría el edificio después del desastre.
Esa noche, otro trozo del edificio se cayó. El reportero de KCTV5 estaba entrevistando a un inspector de la ciudad cuando otra pieza de la iglesia cedió a su peso y se vino abajo. Las investigaciones preliminares muestran que la edad del edificio – el cual fue construido en 1931 – en combinación tanto con las deficiencias estructurales como con las fuertes lluvias del 6 de agosto, tuvieron que ver con el colapso.
Aunque Leal lamentó la pérdida del edificio que ha sido sede de su comunidad de adoración de 150 miembros por 83 años, él estaba igualmente estupefacto porque todas las vidas en peligro durante el colapso se salvaron.
“Ante todo, doy gracias (a Dios) por este milagro”, dijo el Pastor, quien estaba visiblemente alterado durante una conferencia de prensa inmediatamente después del colapso de la iglesia. “Se puede ver claramente la mano de Dios en esto”.
Hablando el lunes (11 de agosto), Leal informó que todavía estaba esperando a que los ingenieros y el personal del seguro dieran un veredicto final sobre el estado del edificio. El departamento de edificios peligrosos de Kansas City ha ordenado que la construcción sea demolida.

“Necesitamos dar gracias a Dios y seguir adelante. El edificio se puede caer, pero nosotros, como iglesia, tenemos que permanecer de pie”, dijo.
Una red de congregaciones hermanas será la sede de los miembros de la iglesia en los meses siguientes, indicó Leal, quien agregó que le ofrece su gratitud a los líderes religiosos que apoyan a su congregación huérfana.
Él ofrece el mismo agradecimiento a los medios de prensa que están siguiendo la travesía de la iglesia.

Few answers in Northeast church collapse
For Rios de Agua Viva Church Pastor Herminio Leal, the moment his church building collapsed was an event divided between tragedy and grace.
The Kansas City, Mo., church was hosting vacation Bible school for 44 children when the building began to collapse around 10 a.m. on Aug. 7 without warning. At about 5 p.m. that day, Leal gave a press conference before news cameras on the state of events and was then still unsure how the building would hold up after the disaster.
That evening, another chunk of the building came crashing down. A KCTV5 reporter was interviewing a city inspector when another piece of the church resigned to its weight and collapsed. Preliminary investigations show the age of the building – which was built in 1931 – combined with both structural deficiencies and heavy rainfall on Aug. 6 all played a part in the collapse.
Although Leal mourned the loss of the 83-year-old home to his 150-member worship community, he was equally stunned that all the lives endangered during its collapse were spared.
“First of all, I thank (God) for this miracle,” the visibly shaken pastor said during a press conference immediately following the church’s collapse. “You can clearly see the hand of God in this.”
Speaking on Monday (Aug. 11), Leal said he was still waiting for engineers and insurance personnel to deliver a final verdict on the state of the building. The city’s dangerous buildings department has ordered the building to be demolished.
The church worshipped this past weekend in Kansas City, Kan., in a loaned space.
“We need to give thanks to God and move forward,” Leal said. “The building can fall, but we as a church need to remain standing.”
A network of sister congregations will host the worshippers in the months to follow, Leal said, adding that he offers his gratitude to the faith leaders supporting his orphaned congregation. He offers the same gratitude to the news outlets that are following the church’s journey.
