Policía de Wichita bajo investigación por tiroteo

Wichita2

Wichita police under investigation for shooting

By Jesus Lopez-Gomez

An officer-involved shooting on Jan. 3 in Wichita that left John Paul Quintero dead in front of his home has resulted in an investigation of the two officers involved in the incident.

The officers responded to a 911 call of a disturbance that dispatchers allege involved alcohol and knives and found what they described as a “belligerent,” intoxicated Quintero seated in a car with his 44-year-old father. Both were asked to exit the vehicle, but only the victim’s father willingly obliged.

What allegedly happened next is unverified information from a press conference the police gave Monday evening (Jan. 6) and a detailed report on the incident in The Wichita Eagle.

Both sources state the 23-year-old victim and the arresting officers engaged in a “verbal exchange.” The officers then tased Quintero. After he allegedly reached for his waistband, they fired on him. He took two bullets to the abdomen and was taken to the hospital for surgery, but died that evening.

The police allege Quintero might have been reaching for a knife, per the dispatcher’s reports. Weapons were confiscated, but nothing that could be directly tied to the shooting has yet been found, according to investigators.

“We believe that the police will try and say that there was a knife present at the scene,” began a statement from the Quintero family released to the media. “We would like to confirm that they confiscated knives from the home, as well as a knife in the car. However, the knife found in the truck was in the back and out of reach of John Paul. None of the knives from the home were outside of the home.”

The statement is linked to a crowd-funding page where visitors can donate to the costs of holding Quintero’s services. A description on the incident on the Web page further explains the victim’s father repeatedly told officers he was both intoxicated and unarmed.

The family has described the shooting as an “execution.” Witnesses report Quintero had his hands up.

The officers involved in the shooting are on paid leave while the investigation continues. A police spokesperson has stated his department will cooperate with all investigating agencies, including the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.
