DHS pide al Congreso financiamiento

Border2

DHS asks Congress for funding

By Chara

Border1The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is running out of money.

To help keep the national borders secure, Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson and other leaders have asked Congress to provide funds to the agency. If funding isn’t approved within a few weeks, the DHS could have to shut down – at least until Congress reaches an agreement.

“The clock to Feb. 27 is ticking,” Johnson was quoted by The Daily Signal as saying. “In these times, the homeland security budget of this government should not be a political football.”

Several news reports indicate that Republicans will approve the funding only if there’s a bill that blocks President Obama’s executive action on immigration.

Several Democratic senators have called on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to approve the DHS funds. The senators wrote a letter expressing their concern about possible threats and terrorist attacks if the funding isn’t approved.

In addition, Tom Ridge, Michael Chertoff and Janet Napolitano, former secretaries of homeland security, wrote a letter requesting that Congress approve the funding. In response to that letter, U.S. Sen. Harry Reid from Nevada issued the following statement:

“Today’s letter from this bipartisan group of former DHS secretaries completely discredits Republicans’ argument that it’s ‘not the end of the world’ to defund the Department of Homeland Security. Senate Democrats have called on Senator McConnell to quit listening to the most extreme members of his caucus and pass a clean bill to fund Homeland Security. Now, three widely respected (former Department of) Homeland Security secretaries are calling for this clean bill as well.”

“If my Republican colleagues want to fix our broken immigration system, I welcome them to bring up comprehensive immigration reform because it would overwhelmingly pass. But if Republicans in Congress defund the DHS, they are simply creating an unnecessary crisis and putting our nation at severe risk. Let’s skip the drama, do the right thing and pass a clean (Department of) Homeland Security funding bill.”
