Todos los años en la noche del día de Acción de Gracias, el Country Club Plaza se prende para dar la bienvenida a la navidad.
Este año, la anual ceremonia de luces, la cual lleva 86 años, empezará a las 5 p.m. el jueves (Nov. 25); empezando con actuaciones y regalos, seguido por la ceremonia a las 7 p.m. con la aparición de The Hembree, The Snow Globes, Isaac Cates and Ordained, y Brad Cunningham. Este año la ceremonia también tendrá presente a los ganadores de la Serie Mundial del 2015, los Kansas City Royals.
De acuerdo a la página de internet del Country Club Plaza, las luces serán probadas el día antes de la ceremonia así la gente podrá ver un poco de lo que se vendrá el siguiente día hasta el 17 de enero de 2016. Adicionalmente, el horario de las tiendas se extenderá abriendo de 10 a.m.-9 p.m. de lunes a viernes y 10 a.m.- 6 p.m. los domingos hasta el 30 de diciembre, comenzando el lunes 23 de noviembre.
Los tours en carruajes también estarán en funcionamiento durante toda la temporada, así como tours aéreos que incluyen cena organizados por el centro de aviación de Kansas City.
Jason Ruiz, residente del área de Kansas City, dice que su familia ha atendido al evento por los últimos tres años y esta esperando la ceremonia de este año.
“Es la manera de empezar la navidad,” dijo. “Hemos estado viniendo por los últimos años… normalmente nos reunimos a comer juntos y luego nos vamos a Plaza a ver las luces. Muchas veces no nos quedamos todo el show pero es como una tradición que adaptamos de venir después de la cena de Acción de Gracias.”
Plaza empezó esta tradición de luces en 1925 cuando Charles Pitrar puso 16 luces en una puerta en el edificio Suydam, el primer edificio de Plaza. En 1930, la primera ceremonia de luces se llevo a cabo.

86th Plaza Lighting Ceremony to be held

Every year on Thanksgiving Day, the Country Club Plaza lights up to welcome Christmas. This year, the 86th annual Plaza Lighting Ceremony will take place on Thursday (Nov. 25th) starting at 5 p.m. with performances and give aways followed by the lighting ceremony at 7 p.m. and a show featuring The Hembree, The Snow Globes, Isaac Cates and Ordained, and Brad Cunningham. This year’s ceremony will also feature the World Series Champions, the Kansas City Royals.
The tradition started in 1925 when Charles Pitrar put 16 lights over a doorway in Suydam building, Plaza’s first building. Five years later, in 1930, the first lighting ceremony was held.
According to the Country Club Plaza website, the lights are tested on Wednesday, a day before the lighting ceremony, where people can see a “sneak peak” of the event. Also, shops’ hours are extended stating Nov. 23 to Dec. 30 10 a.m to 9 p.m Monday though Friday and until 6 p.m on Sunday.
Carriage rides will also be operating the holiday season and the Kansas City Aviation Centre gives air tours including dinner.
Jason Ruiz, Kansas City area resident says his family has attended the event for the part three years and looks forward this year’s ceremony.
“It’s the way to start Christmas,” he said. “We’ve been coming for a few years now. We usually gather with my family, have thanksgiving dinner and go to the plaza. Sometimes we don’t stay for the entire show but it’s the tradition to come after thanksgiving dinner.”
According to the Country Club Plaza website, “the magic of the season continues each night when the lights come on at 5:00pm through Sunday, January 17, 2016.”
