Democratic debate No. 4: Here comes Hillary Rodham Clinton

Commentary by Dermidio Juez-Perez

During the past few weeks, the tone of the race for the Democratic presidential nomination has changed significantly.
During the first three Democratic debates, Hillary Rodham Clinton presented herself stress-free and confident. She answered every question calmly and defended her positions on issues without raising her voice or attacking other candidates.
That was before the debate last Sunday night (Jan. 17) in South Carolina.
If there were any doubts that the former secretary of state feels a significant threat from Bernie Sanders, they were erased Sunday night. It was clear from her performance.
Although Sanders has captured some of Clinton’s followers, the former secretary of state remains significantly ahead of him in the polls. But despite the gap between Clinton and Sanders, she still felt threatened enough to change her debating strategy Sunday night.
Clinton used three tactics. First, she accused Sanders of such betrayals of his ideals as voting with the gun lobby numerous times and of wanting to abolish Obamacare. She also embraced Obama’s presidency and complimented the president on everything he has done while in office.
In addition, Clinton kept up the volume of her voice. At times, the candidate seemed to be verbally shooting Sanders. It was reminiscent of 2008, when Clinton did the same thing to then-U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, who has become her “BFF” now that he’s president and she has a chance to be his successor.
As the primaries approach, the race between Clinton and Sanders for the Democratic nomination is intensifying. If the polls begin showing a shift toward Sanders, don’t doubt for a second that Hillary Rodham Clinton will continue to raise her voice until she proves her point that she deserves the nomination.
