Durante los últimos años, las enfermedades transmitidas sexualmente (STD por sus siglas en inglés) han aumentado en Estados Unidos, reportó recientemente los Centros para Control y Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC).
Específicamente, la clamidia, gonorrea y sífilis han aumentado desde 2006, de acuerdo con un reporte por el CDC. Principalmente, las STD han aumentado entre los jóvenes, cada año se están infectando 20 millones de americanos entre las edades de 15 y 24 años.
“La epidemia que se está empeorando de STD en Estados Unidos es un llamado claro para tener mejores diagnósticos, tratamiento y prevención”, fue citado Jonathan Mermin, director del Centro Nacional para VIH/SIDA, Hepatitis Viral, STD y Prevención de Tuberculosis del CDC, en un artículo del sitio en la red del CDC.
Muchas enfermedades transmitidas sexualmente no son diagnosticadas. Si no reciben el tratamiento apropiado pueden tener repercusiones que cambian la vida.
Para evitar contagiarse de una enfermedad sexual, el CDC aconseja que los hombres -particularmente hombres activos sexualmente -usen condones. Para detectar -y si es necesario dar tratamiento para una enfermedad sexual, la agencia recomienda que las personas sexualmente activas se realicen exámenes con frecuencia. Si se detecta una enfermedad sexual, se recomienda recibir el tratamiento lo más pronto posible.

CDC reports national increase in STDs

Over the past several years, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) have increased in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported recently.
Specifically, chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis have increased since 2006, according to a report by the CDC. Primarily, STDs have increased among the young population, with 20 million Americans between ages 15-24 becoming infected every year.
“America’s worsening STD epidemic is a clear call for better diagnoses, treatment and prevention,” Jonathan Mermin, director of the CDC’s National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and Tuberculosis Prevention, was quoted in an article on the CDC Web site as saying.
Many STDs go undiagnosed. If not treated properly, they can have life-altering repercussions.
To avoid getting an STD, the CDC advises men – particularly sexually active men – to use condoms. To detect – and if necessary, treat – and STD, the agency recommends that sexually active people get tested frequently. If an STD is detection, treatment as soon as possible is recommended.
