Planear con anticipación para el funeral de usted o de su familia es una buena idea, según Mario Rodríguez, asesor en planificación previa de McGilley Midtown Chapel en Kansas City, Mo.
Rodríguez vio la necesidad que la gente comience la planificación anticipada de funerales. Para ayudar a satisfacer esa necesidad, se unió al equipo McGilley en el 2015.
“Vi que … había una necesidad de que la gente tenga un contrato de proyección previa,” dijo. “Muchas personas esperan hasta el último minuto – y una cosa que me di cuenta es que, cuando la gente … tiene la necesidad inmediata, el pago se debe hacer ahí mismo.”
Y el pago que es debido a una “necesidad inmediata” puede parecer costoso para la mayoría de la gente. Según Rodríguez, los gastos funerarios se han duplicado en los últimos años. Un funeral que costaba $ 5,000 está costando entre $ 10.000 y $12.000. Se espera que los costos continúen aumentando.
“Cuando las personas vienen a comprar un contrato preneed, ahorran entre 20 y 25 por ciento”, dijo. “Los contratos son 100 por ciento garantizados. Vienes aquí y nosotros nos encargamos de ustedes. Hemos creado un plan de pago de tres, cinco o incluso 10 años, si … (es que) lo necesita.”
Según Adriana Arruñada, consejera de servicios familiares en McGilley, personas de todas las edades pueden empezar a planear para el futuro. El cliente más joven que ella ha ayudado tenía 27 años.
El gerente de McGilley Robert Kalkofen, que ha servido a la comunidad desde 1981, dijo que hay una variedad de paquetes de planeación que la gente puede seleccionar. McGilley también proporciona una guía de planificación en una serie de preguntas para ayudar a determinar los deseos de la persona.
McGilley ofrece otros servicios de planeación, orientados a la comunidad hispana. Según Rodríguez, la funeraria manda cuerpos a México.
“Nos reunimos con el Consulado de México (en Kansas City, Mo.) y les dejamos saber que estamos aquí para ayudar,” dijo. “Todos los meses, enviamos entre unos 15-20 cuerpos de regreso a México. Nos gusta trabajar con la gente y hacerles saber que estamos ahí y los podemos ayudar.”
Otros servicios de McGilley incluyen su evento de Bendición de Ángeles un servicio al final del año para las familias que han perdido a un ser querido durante el año. Durante el servicio, cada familia recibe una vela y un ángel con el nombre del familiar, fecha de nacimiento y fecha de la muerte.
“El mensaje que tenemos … es un mensaje de esperanza – un mensaje que la familia va a continuar y que el ser querido se va a vivir en sus corazones,” dijo Kalkofen.

Planning early for funeral can save money

Planning ahead for you or your family’s funeral is a good idea, according to Mario Rodriguez, preplanning advisor at McGilley Midtown Chapel in Kansas City, Mo.
Rodriguez saw the need for people to start planning funerals early. To help meet that need, he joined the McGilley team in 2015.
“I saw that … (there was) a need for people to have (a) preplanning contract,” he said. “So many people wait until last minute – and one thing that I realized is that, when people … (have an) immediate need, payment is due right there.”
And the payment that’s due for an “immediate need” can seem steep to most people. According to Rodriguez, funeral costs have doubled over the past few years. A funeral that cost $5,000 before is costing between $10,000 and $12,000. Costs are expected to continue to increase.
“When individuals come to buy a preneed contract, they save between 20 (and) 25 percent,” he said. “The contracts are 100 percent guaranteed. You come here and we take care of you. We set up a payment plan of three, five or even 10 years if … (you) need it.”
According to Adriana Arrunada (Arruñada in Spanish), McGilley family service counselor, people of all ages can start planning ahead. The youngest customer she has helped was 27 years old.
McGilley manager Robert Kalkofen, who has served the community since 1981, said there are a variety of planning packages people can select. McGilley also provides a planning guide with a series of questions to help determine the person’s wishes and desires.
McGilley offers other planning services, including those geared toward the Hispanic community. According to Rodriguez, the funeral home ships bodies back to Mexico.
“We met with the Mexican Consulate (in Kansas City, Mo.) and we let … (them) know that we are here to help,” he said. “Every single month, we send about 15-20 bodies back to Mexico. We like to work with people and let them know that we are there and we can help.”
McGilley’s other services include its Blessing of the Angels event – an-end-of-the-year service for families who’ve lost a loved one during the year. During the service, each family receives a candle and an angel with the love one’s name, date of birth and date of death.
“The message that we … (offer) is a message of hope – a message that the family will continue and that the loved one is going to live in their hearts,” Kalkofen said.
