Possible lead contamination detected in water of Olathe neighborhood

Olathe, Kan., is trying to address a potential water contamination problem – and perhaps avoid the type of crisis that has put a Michigan city in the media spotlight.
On Wednesday (April 20), several Kansas City area news agencies reported the city had detected possibly excessive lead levels in an Olathe neighborhood. They also reported that city employees were giving door-to-door warnings to residents of the suburb’s Ridgeview South area, telling them to avoid bathing in or drinking from their tap water, pending further testing results.
In a news release, the city government stated that “some preliminary samples in the area showed elevated lead levels,” but added that the testing might show “a false positive for high lead content.” However, Tim Danneberg, Olathe director of communication and customer services, told Fox 4 News that the city “felt out of an abundance of caution that we really needed to get out in front of this and notify the neighbors,” given the lead level results the city had received on April 15.
The reports from Olathe come a few months after Flint, Mich.’s contaminated water crisis began drawing widespread media attention. As has been reported, the crisis began in 2014, when Flint began using water from the Flint River, rather than from the Detroit Water and Sewage Department system, much of which came from Lake Huron. Flint residents, particularly children, began suffering from health problems after the switch, particularly because of the levels of lead in the river water.
Since November 2015, various lawsuits have been filed against state, county and/or local officials, including Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder. In related news, CNN reported Wednesday that criminal charges have been filed against government workers Stephen Busch, Mike Glasgow and Mike Prysby.
