Prepare yourself for the high school-to-college transition

Commentary by Paula Alzate

For many high school students, graduation is around the corner. That means some important decisions should be made soon, particularly by those students who plan to attend college.
If you’re graduating soon from high school and plan to attend college, understand that life in college won’t be the same as it was in high school. Your responsibilities, expectations and environment will change.
According to the “U.S. News College Compass,” published by U.S. News & World Report, “as many as 1 in 3 first-year college students won’t make it back for (their) sophomore year. The reasons run the range from family problems and loneliness to academic struggles and a lack of money.” But as a graduate student – and thus, as someone who has gone through the process – I encourage you to overcome those obstacles. In the end, it’ll be worth it.
The following are some tips to help you in transitioning from high school to college:
*Don’t procrastinate: Try to stay on top of your homework and class projects. That way, it’ll be easier at the end of the semester to just study for your finals.
*Go to class every day: You have to manage your schedule, so make sure to create course schedules where you’ll be in class every day and have a rhythm to your week.
*Study outside of class: Most professors won’t check your homework every day, as they did in high school. They expect you to read and study outside the classroom.
*Get help if needed: Most colleges and universities have tutors on campus. If you’re struggling, seek help.
*Get involved: College is more than studying and taking exams. Join clubs and organizations that interest you. You’ll make connections and friends that you’ll remember – and that will benefit you in the years after college.
